How to create, update, and reset your Roku PIN and customize preferences

You can set a Roku PIN to authorize purchases and download channels on your Roku player, as well as enable parental controls on The Roku Channel. Setting a Roku PIN can help you prevent unauthorized purchases and downloads on your account.Hollis Johnson/Business Insider To create, update, or reset your four-digit Roku PIN, you need to log in to your account on the Roku website. Click "Update" in the website's "PIN Preferences" to add or change the PIN as well as choose payment and parental controls settings.  If you forget your PIN you can easily reset it using your Roku account login information. Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories. Roku allows you to use a four-digit PIN (personal identification number) to ensure only authorized users can make purchases. It can also be used as a parental controls feature to keep children from watching certain kinds of content. Using the Roku PIN is optional, but it's a good idea if you are not the only person who uses the Roku player.  The Roku PIN can only be created, updated, and changed from the Roku website when logged in to your Roku account — you can't do it using the Roku player itself. How to add or update Roku PIN1. Go to my.roku.com in a web browser and sign into your account, if needed. 2. In the PIN preference section, you can see your current PIN preferences. If you've never set up a PIN before, it should say that a PIN is not required to make purchases, and a PIN isn't required to view content. 3. Click Update.Go to the Roku website to create or update your PIN and PIN settings.Dave Johnson4. If your PIN settings are currently turned off, you'll need to select Always require a PIN to make purchases and add items from the Channel Store or Always require a PIN to make purchases. When you select one of the options that requires using a PIN to make a purchase or add content, you can create a PIN.Dave Johnson5. Enter your desired PIN and verify it. Both fields must match exactly. 6. Make any additional changes you want to your PIN settings. You can set your preference to use the PIN for purchases or for parental controls. 7. Click Save Changes. How to reset your Roku PINRoku makes it easy to reset your PIN because, unlike most other systems that use PINs, you don't need to know your old PIN to create a new one. You only need to be able to log into your Roku account using your username and password. And if you've forgotten that as well, you can perform a password recovery. 1. Go to my.roku.com in a web browser and sign in to your account, if needed. If you don't know your password, click Forgot password? and follow the instructions to get a password reset email. 2. In the PIN Preference section, click Update.3. Enter your desired PIN and verify it. Both fields must match exactly. Note that you don't need to remember your old PIN to reset it or create a new one. If you've forgotten your PIN, don't worry — you don't need to know it to make a new one.Dave Johnson4. Make any additional changes you want to your PIN settings, including using the PIN while making purchases and if you want to use it for parental controls. 5. Click Save Changes. Managing your Roku PINRoku uses a single PIN to control several different security features: making purchases, installing streaming channels, and enabling parental controls.Using Roku PIN for purchases and adding contentWhen you create, update, or reset your Roku PIN on the Roku website, you always have the option to use that PIN for purchases and adding content. Here are your three options and what they do:Always require a PIN to make purchases and add items from the Channel Store. If you save this selection, you will need to enter your PIN before making a purchase that will use the payment information saved in your Roku account. You'll also need to enter the PIN before you install any streaming channel onto your player. Always require a PIN to make purchases. While you'll still need to enter your PIN before making a purchase, Roku will not request your PIN before installing a streaming channel. PIN is not required to make any purchase or add any items from the Channel Store. This turns off the PIN security feature for purchases and installing content. If you're not the only person with access to the Roku player, this selection leaves you vulnerable to unintended purchases. Using Roku PIN for Parental ControlsWhen you create, update, or reset your Roku PIN on the Roku website, you have the option to use that PIN for Roku's Parental Controls feature on The Roku Channel. You have four options for setting controls using the PIN:Little kids. If you choose this option, you can watch anything on The Roku Channel that's rated G, TV-Y, or TV-G without a PIN. All other content — including R, NC-17, TV-MA, PG-13, TV-14, PG, TV-PG, TV-Y7, Unrated, and Not Rated requires a PIN.Young kids. With this option selected, you can watch G, PG, TV-Y, TV-G, TV-Y7, and TV-PG content on The Roku Channel without a PIN. Everything else requires a PIN.Teens. When you choose Teens, you can watch TV-14, PG-13, TV-PG, PG, TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-G, and G content on The Roku Channel without a PIN. Other content requires a PIN.Off. How to download and use Grammarly in Google Docs to improve your writing

Here's how to install the free Grammarly extension for your web browser and start applying Grammarly's recommendations in Google Docs. You can install the Grammarly Chrome extension to get writing suggestions in Google Docs. Thana Prasongsin/Getty Images You can use Grammarly in Google Docs by installing a browser extension. Grammarly makes spelling, grammar, and punctuation suggestions for free, though there's a premium subscription that adds additional features. If you set goals within your document for audience, formality, and tone, Grammarly makes custom recommendations to help you achieve your desired writing style. Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories. Every one of us needs some help with our writing, which is why many people turn to spelling and grammar checkers. Microsoft has spent years honing the tools built into Microsoft Office, but what if you use Google Docs? A popular option is Grammarly, a free spelling and grammar checker that integrates into your browser and can correct your work everywhere you type online, including Google Docs. Even though Grammarly for Google Docs is still in beta mode, it's easy to install and start using. It works in all common browsers, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge - but the fullest experience with advanced suggestions are only available in Chrome. How to install Grammarly for Google Chrome1. Start Google Chrome and, if you haven't already installed the Grammarly for Chrome extension, go to the Grammarly for Chrome page and click Add to Chrome. Install the Grammarly extension for your browser. Dave Johnson 2. Confirm you want to install the extension by clicking Add extension. 3. The Grammarly web page should open. Log in to your Grammarly account or create a new free account. 4. Go to Google Docs in your browser and open a document. You should see the Grammarly icon (an arrow that curves into the shape of the letter G) or the total number of suggested edits in the document in the lower-right margin of the page. Click it to open the Grammarly sidebar. Click the Grammarly icon to see your suggestion changes. Dave Johnson Quick tip: You can install the Grammarly extension for other popular browsers, including Safari, Firefox, and Edge. Grammarly works largely the same in each of those browsers, though you'll get the fullest experience with the most suggestions in Chrome. How to enable Grammarly in Google DocsOnce you have installed the Grammarly extension, you should be able to use it in Google Docs. If you don't see the Grammarly icon or the number of suggested edits, Grammarly might be disabled. To check:1. Click the Extension icon in the toolbar at the top of the browser.2. In the drop-down, click Grammarly. 3. Make sure Check for writing suggestions on Google Docs is turned on. The button should be swiped to the right. If Grammarly isn't working in Google Docs, make sure it's enabled. Dave Johnson How to use Grammarly sidebar in Google DocsTo start using Grammarly in Google Docs, open a Google Doc (or create a new document). There are two ways to review the suggested edits:You should be able to see suggested edits in the document by looking for text with a red underline. You can hover your cursor over the red underlined text to see suggestions, and accept or reject them one by one. Hover the mouse to see suggestions. Dave Johnson You can review your edits in the Grammarly sidebar. To do that, click the Grammarly icon in the lower-right margin of the page to tell Grammarly to display the number of suggested edits in the document. If you already see the number of suggested edits, click that number. The sidebar should appear and display all the suggested edits in a list. You can now work your way through the list, one item at a time, accepting or rejecting edits as you go. To accept a change, click the item you want to use. You can reject a suggestion by clicking the Dismiss icon shaped like a trashcan. To see additional context and details about the grammar rules behind a suggestion, click Learn more. The Grammarly sidebar shows all the suggested edits in a long list. Dave Johnson Quick tip: You might see an entry for Premium suggestions at the top of the sidebar. These are suggestions generally related to improving the style, clarity, and tone of your document, and you need to pay for a subscription to Grammarly to unlock these suggestions. One advantage of using the sidebar is that it's easy to see at a glance how well your document scores in four categories Grammarly uses to assess your document: Correctness, Clarity, Engagement and Delivery. At the top of the sidebar you can see a fuel gauge score for each. How to set goals on Grammarly in Google DocsWhile Grammarly is a powerful tool for ensuring your spelling and grammar are correct, many people also rely on Grammarly to ensure their tone and presentation matches the document's intended audience. Grammarly can customize the suggestions it gives you based on how you set your document's goals. Here's how to use it:1. If necessary, click the suggested edit counter at the bottom of the document to open the Grammarly sidebar.2. Atop the sidebar, click the Adjust Goals button, which looks like an archery target.3. In the Set goals window, choose the settings you want for this document. You can pick the audience, level of formality, tone and intent. If you're a premium subscriber, you can also choose the domain, such as academic, business, creative, and so on. If you customize the Set Goals options Grammarly will tailor its recommendations. Dave Johnson 4. When you're finished, click Done. You might now see the number of suggested edits change; the specific suggestions will vary depending on what document settings you choose. Grammarly will have a different suggestion for word choice, for example, depending on whether you're trying to appeal to a general audience or experts in this field. Quick tip: The suggested edits you see may vary depending on whether you're using the free or premium version of Grammarly. You can't select Domain options using the free version. Moreover, Grammerly won't make suggestions related to engagement or delivery unless you're a premium user. How to use the new Hide My Email feature in iOS 15 to keep your email address private on online forms and services

Apple's "Hide My Email" feature lets you create fake email addresses that keep your real email private, but still forward you important mail. The "Hide My Email" feature in iOS 15 can help keep your data safe online. You can use Hide My Email when signing up for new services with your Apple ID or when filling out forms. Any email sent to your fake addresses can be forwarded to your real one. Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories. Online privacy is incredibly important, but it's hard to keep your identity secure when you have to give your email address away whenever you join a website. And if your email address is just your name - looking at you, jane.doe@gmail.com - you could be giving away even more data. That's where Apple's "Hide My Email" service comes in. Hide My Email is a feature that lets you sign up for websites and fill out forms with a fake email address. This keeps people from seeing your email address, and still lets you get the emails you want. Here's how to use Hide My Email, and manage your fake email addresses. How to use Hide My Email on your iPhoneHide My Email is available to all users with iOS 15, but you'll need iCloud+ to use it in some places. You'll see Hide My Email as an option in two situations:Using Sign in With AppleA few years ago, Apple launched the Sign in With Apple program. This lets you make accounts in new apps using your Apple ID information. It's a quick way to get started in an app without having to remember a new username and password.1. Open an app that offers Sign in With Apple as a choice when creating your account, and pick that option. You should be given a choice: You can pick Share My Email, which gives the app your real email address; or Hide My Email, which will give them a fake one.2. Pick Hide My Email, and then Continue. If the app wants your email, you'll be given the option to hide it. The 4 best drip coffee makers for a perfect cup of coffee in 2021

Drip coffee machines range from basic brewers with an on/off function to programmable, all-in-one appliances. Here are the best coffee makers of 2021. Prices are accurate at the time of publication.Dylan Ettinger/Business Insider There are many excellent choices for high-quality electric coffee makers on the market today. Using my decade of coffee industry experience, I tested 8 machines to determine which performed best. Café Specialty's Drip Coffee Maker produced the best-tasting coffee and is easy to use. Electric drip coffee makers provide the quickest, easiest way to brew coffee. But can a coffee maker help you achieve the same great cup of coffee that you can get from your favorite cafe? As it turns out, yes.Automatic coffee makers have come a long way in the past few years. As appreciation of specialty coffee in the United States has grown significantly, manufacturers of coffee makers have outfitted their products with a variety of new features, many of which are designed to emulate facets of manually brewing pour-over coffee. For example, many modern machines come equipped with a pre-infusion cycle that allows the coffee to bloom, fully-customizable temperature controls, and settings that allow you to choose your preferred brewing strength. Whether you want a coffee maker that's straightforward and simple, one that allows you to make a wide variety of drinks, or one that gives you precise control, you'll find it in this buying guide. Here are the best coffee makers in 2021:Best drip coffee maker overall: Café Specialty Drip Coffee MakerBest budget drip coffee maker: Kitchenaid 12 Cup Drip Coffee MakerBest drip coffee maker for specialty drinks: Ninja Specialty Coffee MakerBest precision drip coffee maker: Breville Precision BrewerBest coffee maker overallDylan Ettinger/Business InsiderCapacity: 10 CupsFilter type: Reusable meshDimensions: Height: 14 in, Width: 7.3 in, Length: 12.5 inSpecial features: Temperature control, Wifi control via mobile phone appSCA certified: YesPros: High build quality, easy to use, consistent performance.Cons: Expensive when compared to competitors. The sleek Café Specialty Drip Coffee Maker looks simple, but it delivers when it comes to performance. It's made primarily of stainless steel with a matte black finish, copper accents, a reusable titanium plated filter, and a vacuum sealed thermal carafe. The water reservoir holds up to 10 cups, and is outfitted with a carbon filter to ensure that any excess minerals in the water don't make it into the coffee. It also offers a temperature control option, an auto brew setting, and wifi connectivity that allows you to control the brewer remotely with a phone app. I found the controls for all these features to be intuitive and easy to use. Most importantly, this SCA certified machine (more on what that designation means here) produces some of the best coffee I tried in my tests. There are options available to brew at multiple degrees of strength, "Gold," "Light," "Medium," and "Bold," with "Gold" being the recommended setting. I tried coffee made at multiple settings and all were good, with the "Gold" and "Bold" having a more well-rounded, full flavor and a slightly heavier body. I was able to taste all the chocolate and fruit notes of the flavor profile in every cup. What makes this coffee maker the best I tested is its combination of simplicity and customizability. It's also extremely consistent — every cup of coffee brewed at every setting tasted just like it should. The only downside with this machine is the high price tag, but if you're willing to invest in a top-tier appliance, the Café Specialty won't let you down.$349.95 FROM WILLIAMS SONOMA$279.00 FROM BEST BUYOriginally $349.99 | Save 20%Best budget drip coffee makerDylan Ettinger/Business InsiderCapacity: 12 CupsFilter type: ReusableDimensions: Height: 14.34 in, Width: 7.17 in, Length: 13.4 inSpecial features: "Dosage Ladder" for easy measuringSCA certified: NoPros: High capacity, multiple options for brew strengthCons: Mostly plastic construction, fewer options than similar modelsThe unfortunate truth is that a high-quality, reliable coffee maker is not going to be cheap. At $99.99, this Kitchenaid 12 Cup Drip Coffee Maker isn't "budget" for most, but this is about the minimum amount you will have to spend on a high-performance machine. The Kitchenaid has many of the same features as our favorite, the Café Specialty, but at less than a third of the price. This coffee maker is built mostly of sturdy plastic, with a glass carafe kept warm with a heating plate. With a 12 cup capacity, it's also one of the largest we tested. It comes with a reusable filter fitted with a convenient "dosage ladder" that matches the volume of ground coffee with the desired amount of water. It's very easy to use and the controls are intuitive, allowing for a "Bold" brewing option, a timed auto brew feature and a cleaning cycle. The coffee the Kitchenaid 12 Cup produced on the normal settings was well extracted and full-flavored, which was impressive considering that it's one of the simpler machines we tested. Using the "Bold" setting made an even better cup. It was much richer with a heavier mouth feel and still maintained all of the beans' chocolatey notes. It may lack a few of the extra features of other coffee makers, but the Kitchenaid delivers delicious results at a fraction of the price.$99.99 FROM AMAZONOriginally $109.99 | Save 9%$99.99 FROM BEST BUYOriginally $109.99 | Save 9%$99.99 FROM KITCHENAIDOriginally $109.99 | Save 9%Best drip coffee maker for specialty drinksDylan Ettinger/Business InsiderCapacity: 10 CupsFilter type: Reusable and paperDimensions: Height: 15 in, Width: 8.8 in, Length: 12.5 inSpecial features: Milk frother, "Specialty" setting, iced coffee settingSCA certified: YesPros: "Specialty" brew setting and milk frother can be used to make espresso-style drinks, wide variety of brewing options.Cons: Lower build quality, mostly made of plastic. If you're looking for versatility in a coffee maker, the Ninja Specialty is the one to get. It can be operated with either a reusable filter or a paper filter. It also has a wide selection of brew sizes, from a single serving cup all the way to a full 18-ounce carafe. If you choose the former, there's a retractable platform that can hold a mug — an addition I found to be incredibly useful.Every setting is easily selected with a dial and light-up icons, along with clearly marked buttons on the face of the coffee maker. But the Ninja's most unique feature is the built-in electric milk frother, which is attached to an arm that folds out from the machine's side. This coffee maker offers multiple brew styles like "Classic," "Rich," "Over Ice," and "Specialty." Every cup I tried on both "Classic," and "Rich" settings was full-bodied and flavorful. What really sets the Ninja apart from the other machines I tested is its "Specialty" brewing feature, which produces a concentrated, 4-ounce pour of coffee. It's not quite as dense as espresso, and doesn't have crema, but I found the taste to be surprisingly similar. The "Specialty" setting paired with the built-in milk frother gives you the option to make specialty drinks like lattes. Again, it's not the same as using an espresso machine — the brewing process is completely different — but I was satisfied with my faux lattes. With a little practice I'm sure cappuccinos, cortados and flavored drinks such as mochas could also be in the rotation.$119.99 FROM AMAZONOriginally $169.99 | Save 29%$119.99 FROM BED BATH & BEYONDOriginally $169.99 | Save 29%$119.99 FROM BEST BUYOriginally $169.99 | Save 29%Best precision drip coffee makerDylan Ettinger/Business InsiderCapacity: 12 CupsFilter type: Reusable and paperDimensions: Height: 15.7 in, Width: 6.7 in, Length: 12.4 inSpecial features: High degree of customizabilitySCA certified: YesPros: Highly customizable brewing variables, high-quality build, mostly stainless steel.Cons: Precision brewing options really most useful for more experienced coffee drinkers. The Breville Precision Brewer offers unmatched control over every variable in the brewing process. It's primarily made of stainless steel with a clear plastic reservoir. The brew basket is detachable, and you can use reusable or paper filters. With a 12 cup capacity, the Breville is perfect for making large batches of coffee, but it performs well at lower volumes as well. Most of the customization is done using the small, back-lit display screen and a single dial. The screen is easy to read and the menus are simple to navigate. When it comes to brewing, the Breville offers multiple preset brewing modes; "Fast," "Gold," (the recommended setting) and "Strong". It also offers presets for making both iced coffee and cold brew. And there's an attachment available that lets you swap out the brew basket with a pourover device like a Hario V60 or Kalita Wave. For my tests, I first tried brewing a pot of coffee with the SCA recommended "Gold" setting and followed that up with the "Strong" setting. The coffee I made on both the "Gold" and "Strong" presets was fully extracted and full-flavored, with the second cup a bit darker and more robust. Beyond these presets, the thing that really sets this brewer apart is the customization available in the "My Brew" setting, which allows users to modify almost every major variable in the brewing process — including the bloom time, water temperature, and water flow rate — and then save those settings for future use. If you're looking for a coffee maker to just get the job done there are simpler and more affordable options. But for the coffee aficionado who wants complete control of the brewing process, the Breville is the best maker you can get right now.$299.95 FROM WILLIAMS SONOMA$299.95 FROM BREVILLEWhat else we consideredDylan Ettinger/Business InsiderCuisinart PurePrecision Pour-Over Thermal Coffee BrewerThis coffee maker is the clear runner-up for the overall best. The Cuisinart PurePrecision is made primarily of stainless steel with a thermal carafe, uses a reusable metal filter, and has an 8 cup capacity. It's advertised as an automated alternative to a pour-over cone, using a pre-infusion cycle, variable water temperature and brew styles to give the user more control. The coffee it makes tasted great, especially when using the "Bold" setting. If the Cafe Specialty or Breville Precision are out of your price range, this is an excellent alternative.Ninja Dualbrew ProThe Ninja Dualbrew Pro offers all the same features and brewing options as the Ninja Specialty, with the addition of an attachment that allows the user to brew coffee from pods. As far as performance is concerned, the Dualbrew Pro performed very similarly to the Ninja Specialty in my tests. The only notable drawback is the lack of a reusable filter basket with the Dualbrew Pro. Switching between the pod brewing and standard brewing functions was a little awkward , and regardless of which setting you use, there will be either a loose plastic cone or pod brewing attachment. Unless you really want the option to use coffee pods, I recommend opting for the Ninja Specialty Brewer instead.Mr. Coffee Pod + 10-CupThe Mr Coffee is another machine that provides the option of brewing coffee pods as well as ground coffee. It has most of the standard features the other coffee makers here have, like a timed auto brew function and a variable "Strong" setting. It requires paper filters which are not included, and offers a water filter that fits into the water tank. The coffee made on the "Strong" setting was significantly better than the standard cup, which seemed slightly under extracted and weak. One positive feature here is that the manufacturers provide a reusable pod that allows you to use your own fresh coffee. The overall performance of this maker doesn't warrant recommending it over any of the others. Unless having a coffee maker that brews both pods and normal ground coffee is appealing, I'd recommend the Kitchenaid or Cuisinart PurePrecision over this one.OXO 8-Cup Coffee MakerThe OXO coffee maker has a good build quality, but lacks many features standard on other products. There's no option for brewing strength and no ability to control water temperature. Because of its lack of features and trouble maintaining temperature, I have a hard time recommending this maker over others I tested. The coffee it produced was acceptable, and it performed well, but at this price point you're better off choosing the Ninja Specialty or the Cuisinart PurePrecision. Our drip coffee maker testing methodologyDylan Ettinger/Business InsiderI have around a decade's worth of experience in the specialty coffee industry. Before testing and reviewing coffee products I worked as a barista, helped open a cafe, and worked behind the scenes in packaging and distribution. For additional expertise, I spoke with Max Gaultieri, barista, roaster and founder of Joules and Watts coffee in Malibu California, and Jessica Rodriguez, who heads the Certified Home Brewer program at the SCA. The coffee makers in this guide were thoroughly tested based on the following objective criteria:Build quality: While testing, I paid attention to the quality of the build, most notably what each coffee maker was primarily made of, (stainless steel, plastic, glass, etc.) I also noted which type of carafe each used and whether they were thermal or glass kept warm with a heating plate.Brewing capacity: For this criteria, I simply noted the maximum brewing capacity for each coffee maker. The machines I tested ranged from 8 to 12 cups of brewing capacityEase of setup and use: To test this, I followed the manufacturer's instructions for setup and operation for each coffee maker. During the setup, I paid close attention to how easy each coffee maker was to set up and use and whether there were any awkward controls or components on each machine.Type of filtration: Each coffee maker uses either a reusable filter (usually plastic mesh or stainless steel,) paper filters, or has the ability to use either.  Customizability: Most of the coffee makers I tested had multiple options to customize the brewing process. Some offered a simple choice between a standard brewing option and a "rich" or "strong" option. Some coffee makers, like the Breville, offered a much higher degree of customizability over brewing variables. For each coffee maker I began by using the recommended brewing preset, usually referred to as the "Medium," "Standard," and "Normal" settings. I then did a second test, again following manufacturer guidelines for any coffee maker that offered a "Strong" or "Bold" option, and tested how each cup tasted compared to the "Standard" settings. Most importantly, I wanted to make sure both of these options with every coffee maker were extracted properly and were not under or over developed.Consistency and flavor of coffee: Taste is ultimately subjective, so I looked primarily at whether each brewer produced consistent results. After testing with manufacturer recommended ratios, I used SCA standards to see if each brewer met expectations for each brewing variable. I pre-measured the coffee and water at the recommended ratio of 1 part coffee to 18 parts water. I used the recommended ratio of coffee to water to make a batch of 8 cups of coffee (8 cups is the maximum batch size that all the coffee makers had in common).  I used a kitchen scale and measured both the coffee and water in grams. I used 60.4 grams of ground coffee to 1088 grams (8 cups) of water. For each test, I timed how long the brewing cycle lasted. I also tested the water temperature in the brew basket after one minute of brewing time, in order to see how close the heating element was able to heat the water to the desired range of 195° - 205°F, and to find out roughly how long it stayed at the desired temperature. I again used the "Standard" option. Once finished, I noted the flavor of each cup and how well it was extracted.Additional features: After testing each coffee maker three times, I went back and tested the common special features or settings of each coffee maker. Some makers had additional brew settings set up for single-cup brewing, concentrated brewing or for making iced coffee. Others had built-in milk frothers. For this test, I looked at how easy each feature was to use and how effective they were in achieving their stated goal.To test these coffee makers I made sure to control as many variables as possible between each test. For each maker I used the Peru Eufemio Dominguez Aguilar Cajamarca from Joules and Watts coffee roasters in Malibu, California. The roast was recommended by Max Gaultieri, Joules and Watts founder and roaster, for it's balanced flavor profile with notes of chocolate cake and blackberry. The coffee was ground fresh at a medium coarseness with a Capresso Infinity conical burr grinder. The water used in each test was tap water filtered by a standard Brita filtration pitcher. Each coffee maker was tested a minimum of three times.Drip coffee maker FAQsHow do I make the perfect cup of coffee in a coffee maker? The best way to make perfect coffee is by making sure your coffee-to-water ratio is correct. You can always follow the manufacturer's instructions, and your ratio might change depending on how strong you want your coffee, but the SCA recommends a coffee to water ratio of 1:18. To get to know your machine, Max Gualtieri recommends you start with "15:1 and adjust up or down to your preference. For example, if you are using 30 grams of coffee you'll use 450 grams of water." What kind of coffee goes in a coffee maker?Any coffee can work in a coffee maker, but there are a few factors to look for that will ensure the best results. First, make sure your coffee is fresh. Most roasters print the roast date on every bag of coffee. Try to find a coffee roasted less than two weeks before you want to brew. Second, if you can, grind your coffee just before brewing. "Optimally, freshly roasted and freshly ground coffee goes into the coffee maker. Yes, grinding is an extra step and yes, it is completely worth it," Gaultieri says.Do fresh grounds in coffee makers really make a difference?"Always!" Gaultieri says. After roasting, all of the flavorful oils and sugars start to decay and the gasses inside the coffee beans leak out, creating a more dull and stale flavor. Pre-grinding your coffee long before brewing amplifies that effect. "The coffee starts to lose volatile aromatic compounds as soon as it is ground," says Gaultieri. By breaking up the beans and releasing more of the gasses and exposing the organic compounds and oils to the air, it spoils even more quickly. What variables affect the coffee brewing process? No matter how you're making your coffee, the same variables always contribute to the quality of the cup you're making. The choice of coffee, grind coarseness, water temperature, coffee-to-water ratio, brewing time and filtration method all contribute heavily to how your coffee is going to turn out. Different brewing methods require adjusting the specifics of those variables, but the most important factor is always going to be the coffee you use. "Start with quality coffee!" Gualtieri says. Make sure it's freshly roasted and freshly ground. Why is water temperature so important for brewing coffee?Water temperature has a huge effect on the coffee brewing process. Brewing at the proper temperature (195° - 205°F, 90° - 96°C) ensures that the proper amount of coffee solubles are extracted. What is blooming and why is it important?Blooming is a commonly recommended step in the brewing process when making pour over coffee. Blooming, or pre-infusing, is when a small amount of hot water is used to soak the beans in order to help release the carbon dioxide gas in the coffee. Without blooming, the CO2 bubbles released can disrupt the overall brewing process by making the ground bed uneven and lead to an uneven extraction. Many coffee makers now utilize a programmed pre-infusion process to help create a more evenly extracted and full-flavored cup of coffee. Why should I buy an electric coffee maker?Electric coffee makers may seem overly complicated and expensive when compared to manual brewing devices like the French press, or a pour-over. Electric coffee makers excel when it comes to consistency. "Both methods use the same variables to extract coffee. One difference with electric coffee makers is there isn't the human variable," Rodriguez says, "A coffee machine is programmed to do the same thing every time it is turned on, and if it is a good machine, it will do this very consistently." Electric coffee makers also often have features such as timed brewing, which can save time in the morning if your schedule is tight.Should I choose a thermal carafe or warming plate?Coffee makers often have either thermal carafes or warming plates to keep coffee warm after it's brewed. But Jessica Rodriguez warns, "The heating plate is sometimes overlooked as an element that can affect flavor. If a brewer has a heating plate to keep the carafe warm, it is really important that the plate does not raise the temperature of the brew, which can have a negative impact on the flavor." In my testing, I found that most coffee makers with thermal carafes do a great job of maintaining the temperature of the coffee for about an hour. What kind of filters should I use?Different coffee makers use different methods of filtration. The most common are reusable metal or mesh filters and single-use paper filters. Some makers even allow the user to choose between the two. The major difference between filtration types is how much of the dissolved coffee solids and oils they allow to pass through. "Filtration affects the beverage clarity which affects the body/mouthfeel sensory experience of coffee." Rodriguez says. Reusable filters have the added bonus of producing less waste and cutting long-term costs. What sets an SCA certified home brewer apart from other coffee makers? The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has a program that rigorously tests coffee makers and certifies the ones that perform to their standards. As Jessica Rodriguez, Certifications Program Manager at the SCA explains, "Multiple production units are submitted and tested at 1L and full capacity for adequate brew basket space to hold the SCA Golden Cup ratio of 55g/L, that they can reach and maintain a brewing temperature of 92 – 96C, the total water contact time falls between 4 – 8 minutes, the total dissolved solids of each brew falls between 1.15% - 1.45% and is consistent from extraction to extraction, and that there is good beverage clarity. Submitted brewers are also subjected to a uniformity of extraction test procedure that analyzes the spent coffee bed for the evenness of extraction." Basically, any SCA certified brewer is proven to produce high-quality, consistent cups of coffee. The best drip coffee maker deals from this guideA good cup of coffee starts with good beans and, of course, a good coffee maker. The 4 best Amazon Echo smart speakers and smart displays of 2021

Amazon's Echo devices come in many styles but all have Alexa built in. Here are the best Echo devices of 2021. Amazon's Echo devices combine reliable Alexa capabilities and easy-to-use smart-home features. The fourth-generation Echo is Amazon's best smart speaker, with good audio quality and a modern design. Read more about why you can trust our tech team to recommend the best products. Echo devices vary in size and price, but all have built-in support for Alexa, Amazon's digital assistant. Alexa's capabilities have significantly improved since its debut. You can ask Alexa questions, set timers, order products, control compatible smart home devices, and more just using your voice. You can also listen to Amazon Music, Spotify, and other music services. Some Echo speakers sound better than others, so you'll want to go with a larger model if you're planning on using yours to play lots of music. Certain Echo devices also have screens that can stream shows, display recipes, and even make video calls. While the newest Echo smart speakers and displays are Amazon's best so far, there are certain models that may be better suited for specific budgets and tasks. With that in mind, we selected the best Echo devices for a variety of needs. Buyers should also keep in mind that many of our picks are expected to go on sale during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so be on the lookout for deals.Table of Contents: Masthead StickyHere are the best Echo devices you can buy:Best Echo overall: Echo (fourth-gen)Best budget Echo speaker: Echo Dot (third-gen)Best Echo with a big screen: Echo Show 10 (third-gen)Best Echo with a small screen: Echo Show 5 (second-gen)Best deals on Amazon Echo smart speakers from this guideAmazon's Echo smart speakers are some of the most affordable and most widely-compatible smart gadgets on the market. As with all of Amazon's products, Echo speakers see discounts of $10 to $20 regularly and can sometimes be bundled with other smart home gadgets. The best deals tend to crop up during Prime Day, Amazon's yearly sales holiday. However, we expect some big discounts during Black Friday and Cyber Monday as well, and some great early deals are already available. Below, we gathered up the best deals on Echo products right now. Before any deal is featured here, we check the historical listing price on Amazon, the prices offered by competitors, and consult our in-house tracking spreadsheet. Here are the best deals we found on our Amazon Echo smart speaker picks.Echo (4th Gen) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)Echo Dot (3rd Gen) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)Read more about how the Insider Reviews team evaluates deals and why you should trust us.Best Echo overallLisa Eadicicco/Business InsiderThe fourth-gen Amazon Echo features an updated design, improved sound, and Amazon's super-smart Alexa digital assistant built right into it.Dimensions: 5.7 x 5.7 x 5.2 inchesWeight: 34.2 ouncesColors: Charcoal, Glacier White, Twilight Blue, and Red (limited edition)Mute button: YesRead our Amazon Echo (fourth generation) reviewPros: Impressive sound quality, affordable, integrated Zigbee hub, 3.5mm port, attractive designCons: Amazon still saves your voice recordings by default, Google offers more color choices for its speakersThe fourth-generation Echo feels like a realization of everything Amazon has been building toward in previous models — a smart speaker that finds just the right balance between audio performance, price, and smart-home capabilities. Unlike the cylindrical design of older models, the latest Echo is shaped like a sphere with a flat bottom, making it look more like a glowing orb than a typical speaker.  Audio quality has been improved thanks to the addition of a second tweeter and new front-firing placement. Our reviewer notes that the fourth-generation Echo sounds better than its predecessor in every way, with louder, deeper, and more full-bodied audio. The new Echo also features an integrated Zigbee hub, which was something previously included only in the more expensive Echo Plus. Zigbee is a smart-home standard that accessories use to pair with one another. A third-generation Echo would have to talk to a separate smart-home hub to access and adjust some devices, like light bulbs. The new Echo can create a direct link without another hub. Alexa capabilities are built-in as well, enabling easy access to Amazon's reliable digital assistant. A blue light glows on the bottom when Alexa is listening. A handy microphone mute button is included for buyers concerned about privacy. On the downside, Amazon still uses your voice recordings by default to help improve Alexa's functionality. Thankfully, you can disable this from the Alexa app, under the Alexa Privacy section in the settings menu.Best budget EchoAmazonThe third-gen Echo Dot may be the entry-level option on this list, but it's still just as smart as its siblings. Plus, its small size is its biggest asset.Dimensions: 3.9 x 3.9 x 1.7 inchesWeight: 10.6 ouncesColors: Charcoal, Heather Gray, Plum, and SandstoneMute button: YesPros: Small, smart, affordable, works just as well as all the othersCons: Audio quality isn't as good as the standard EchoThough there's a newer fourth-generation Dot on the market, the third-generation Echo Dot is still the best budget Echo you can buy thanks to its lower price. For less than half the cost of the standard Echo, you get a hockey puck-sized gadget that can help you control your smart devices with your voice, answer questions, and connect to external speakers through a Bluetooth signal. The Echo Dot's best feature is definitely its small size. You can stick it just about anywhere, and because it has a similar microphone array as its bigger siblings, it won't have a problem hearing your requests. Whether you're going for subtlety or want the best way to dip your toe into the smart-home ocean, this is your best choice.Third-generation Echo Dots remain on sale at Amazon for a discounted price, but buyers should keep in mind that a fourth-generation model is available. The latest Dot features a spherical design and slightly improved sound quality, but overall performance is essentially the same.Since the third-generation Dot is less expensive and is likely to see big discounts for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we still recommend it over the fourth-gen version for budget shoppers. If you really prefer the newer model's orb-shaped look, however, it could be worth the extra money. Best Echo with a big screenAmazonThe Echo Show 10 can display information that its screenless siblings can only read to you, making it extra useful for timers and calendar events.Dimensions: 9.9 x 9 x 6.7 inchesWeight: 90.3 ouncesScreen size: 10.1-inch HD touchscreenMute button: Yes, along with built-in camera shutterRead our Echo Show 10 reviewPros: 10.1-inch screen, the ability to see Alexa's responses to you, ability to follow you as you move in your homeCons: Not entirely accurate in facing the right direction, higher price than the screenless optionsTo put it simply, this is an Echo with a 10-inch screen. It can do anything a standard Echo can, but it shows the information visually, in addition to audibly. For instance, if you set a timer you'll be able to watch it count down. You'll be able to see your calendar when you ask Alexa about your upcoming events, and you can even watch Prime Video, Hulu, and more. The Echo Show 10 is a particularly handy companion in the kitchen. If it'd help to see a measurement conversion instead of just hearing it said out loud (there are 16 tablespoons in a cup, by the way), the Echo Show is a really good option. You can also visually follow recipes, which is sometimes easier than audio. In February 2021, Amazon released the third-generation Echo Show 10. The device is a step up from its predecessor as its screen now has the ability to turn toward you when you say the wake word or engage in an activity. Its 13-megapixel camera can also center you in its frame for any video calls you make. Though beneficial in some cases, this new following feature is not always the most accurate and it takes some getting used to.Best Echo with a small screenAmazonThe Echo Show 5 has a smaller, 5-inch screen than the original model, making it perfect for use as a smart alarm clock on your bedside table.Dimensions: 5.8 x 3.4 x 2.9 inchesWeight: 14.5 ouncesScreen size: 5.5-inch touchscreenMute button: Yes, along with built-in camera shutterPros: 5-inch screen, the ability to see Alexa's responses to youCons: Camera is lower resolution than more expensive models, screen isn't HDThe Show 5 is the smallest Echo with a screen that Amazon sells. It has a 5-inch display, so it can show video content, security camera footage, and visual representations of Alexa's answers. It can also display the time, and you can use it to set alarms to wake you up in the morning, making it a great smart alarm clock for your bedside table. If you love the idea of seeing Alexa's responses to your questions and requests, but you want a smaller device, the Echo Show 5 is a great option. The latest second-generation Echo Show 5 launched in June 2021. Not much has changed compared to the first-gen version except for the camera. The new device has a 2-megapixel camera, a step up from the older model's 1-megapixel camera. If you can find the original Show 5 in stock and on sale for a good deal price, it's still a solid buy. But since they're usually priced about the same, the second-gen model is the one to get. What else we consideredChristian de Looper/Business InsiderEcho Dot (fourth generation):  Like the standard Echo speaker, the latest Echo Dot swaps out its old puck-shaped design for a new spherical shape. Despite the updated look, however, the new Echo Dot still uses a single 1.6-inch speaker driver. Though the new Dot is an impressive smart speaker in its own right, the less expensive third-generation model sounds very similar and is actually easier to wall mount. With that in mind, we still recommend the older Echo Dot as our top budget pick. Amazon also has a fourth-generation Echo Dot with Clock. As the name implies, this version adds a built-in digital clock, enabling customers to easily see the time or temperature. Read our Amazon Echo Dot (fourth generation) review here.Amazon Echo FAQsAmazonAre Amazon Echo and Alexa the same thing?Amazon Echo and Alexa are not the same thing, but the two are closely related. All Echo devices support Alexa, so it's best to think of Alexa as the primary feature of an Amazon Echo. What does the Amazon Echo do?Amazon Echo smart speakers and displays are capable of many useful features. Most notably, Echo devices include integrated support for Amazon Alexa. This enables Alexa voice commands so you can ask questions, set timers, check weather, get news updates, play music, and control other compatible smart devices.Do I need to have an Amazon account to use Echo?In order to set up and use an Echo device with Alexa you need to have an Amazon account. That said, Echo products don't require a paid membership to Amazon Prime. Buyers can simply use a free Amazon account to get started with the device and use its main features. Should I wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday to buy an Amazon Echo? Amazon Echo devices get big discounts on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. If you're planning to buy an Echo this holiday season, you should wait until these deal events to snag one for the best price.Echo devices also get deals on Prime Day, Amazon's annual sale that typically lands during the summer. Misfits Market is a delivery service worth trying if you care about shopping ethical and sustainable groceries in particular.Related Article Module: The 5 best places to buy groceries online in 2021Not only is it really convenient to use, but it also focuses on organic and non-GMO produce that would've gone to waste for a variety of reasons (e.g., cosmetic imperfections or surplus inventory). Everything's reasonably priced, too. I tried Misfits Market for the first time recently and loved how easy and affordable it was. Learn more details about how the grocery delivery service works and what to expect below. How to order groceries with Misfits MarketOnce you sign up for an account, you'll choose a day of the week you'd like for your groceries to be delivered every time. You can change this day at any time, skip upcoming orders, and pause or cancel your account easily. You can only shop and pick out your items during a three-day shopping window before your box ships out. I recommend shopping as early as possible once your shopping window opens (you'll get an email reminder) because some items sell out quickly. If you don't build your box or meet the $30 order minimum within the three-day window, your order will be automatically skipped. The virtual grocery aisles of Misfits Market are organized so you can find anything you're looking for.Misfits MarketThe majority of Misfits Market's produce is certified organic and non-GMO, with items clearly labeled if they're not. The grocery stock is also based on location and seasonality. I shopped in the middle of summer, which meant I could load up my cart with cherries, tomatoes, watermelon, mangoes, and cucumbers. In addition to fresh veggies, fruits, herbs, and proteins, Misfits Market carries milk (and milk alternatives), snacks, and drinks. Like the farmers that Misfits Market works with to source produce, these pantry brands operate with sustainable values. In my order, for example, I added tortilla chips from Garden of Eatin', which are made with organic, sustainably harvested corn, and oat milk from Minor Figures, a carbon-neutral brand. Here's a sampling of the pricing for part of my grocery order:The organic produce is fairly priced, and I was able to order a ton of different produce and pantry items for just under $50.Misfits MarketAfter confirming your order, you'll get notifications for when it's shipped out and delivered. My box of arugula was a little banged up, but everything else looked good and undamaged. As packaging goes, there was no more than usual for a fresh grocery delivery: an insulated liner, ice packs, and cardboard dividers to protect all the goods and keep them chilled. It's certainly more packaging than if you went grocery shopping in person, but it's at least recyclable. There were protective dividers and insulated packs to keep all the items cold, fresh, and secure.Connie Chen/InsiderFor the actual produce, some items, like the plums and potatoes, were a little smaller than I was used to, but for the most part, there weren't any peculiar items or surprises. As with any online grocery delivery service, you're relinquishing the control of picking out the exact zucchini or bunch of cilantro that you want, and you just have to trust the service to pick out ripe, fresh produce for you. In return, you save on time and energy. After my experience with Misfits Market, I think the tradeoff is well worth it, especially because all the produce tasted fresh and delicious. Connie Chen/InsiderMisfits Market vs. Imperfect Foods — which one should you try?Misfits Market and Imperfect Foods have similar missions of offering produce and other groceries that could've gone to waste otherwise. They both offer fresh produce, proteins, dairy, snacks, and pantry staples. Imperfect also sells some household and beauty items. Imperfect is a little different from Misfits in that Imperfect recommends items based on your preferences, and then you can customize your order by replacing or taking out items. In addition, Imperfect assigns a specific delivery day to you based on your ZIP code in order to make delivery routes as efficient and carbon emission-friendly as possible. Meanwhile, Misfits lets you choose and edit your delivery date. Imperfect's delivery fee is $4.99-$8.99 depending on your area and delivery date, while Misfits' delivery fee is a flat $5.50. Lastly, the two operate in different states. Imperfect, for example, delivers in California, while Misfits is not yet available in California. US military surgeons are losing their skills at a "precipitous rate"

US military surgeons are quickly losing their skills as the number of surgical procedures in military hospitals declines, a recent study found. US and foreign military medical personnel and medical students during an umbilical hernia surgery aboard the hospital ship USNS Comfort in Ecuador, October 22, 2018. US Navy/MCS Seaman J. Keith Wilson US military surgeons are quickly losing their skills as the number of surgical procedures in military hospitals declines. According to a recent study, 10.1% of the military's general surgeons met surgical standards in 2019, down from 16.7% in 2015. US military surgeons are losing their skills at a "precipitous rate" as the number of surgical procedures performed in military hospitals has declined, a study has found. The number of general surgery procedures dropped by nearly 26% from 2015 to 2019, while surgical readiness - measured by the military health system's standards for general surgery - declined by 19.1%.According to the study, published October 27 in JAMA Surgery, 16.7% of general surgeons in the military in 2015 met the military's surgical standards, while just 10.1% met the threshold in 2019.The standards, defined by the knowledge, skills and abilities, or KSAs, established for deployed surgeons, are designed to ensure that a surgeon can perform in combat settings.Members of the Defense Health Board, an advisory committee to the secretary of defense on military medical issues, and military trauma surgeons have long raised concerns over the loss of skills following the decline of combat operations and the relatively low number of procedures done in military facilities compared with civilian hospitals. The study, led by Dr. Michael Dalton of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital Boston, is the first to contain data to back these concerns, according to the authors."The findings of this study suggest that loss of surgical workload has resulted in further decreases in military surgeon readiness and may require substantial changes in patient care flow in the U.S. Military Health System to reverse the change," the authors wrote. Rear Adm. Bruce Gillingham, surgeon general of the Navy, right, inspects a training mannequin in San Diego, July 13, 2021. US Navy/MCS3 Jake Greenberg The reduction of surgical volume at military hospitals occurred at the same time that civilian facilities saw a 3.2% increase in surgical care for Tricare patients, including military personnel, families and retirees. But that increase in procedures in civilian settings was not large enough to "fully account for the loss of procedures at military treatment facilities."The authors didn't say what accounted for the difference between the loss of procedures at military hospitals and the smaller gains at civilian hospitals but added that further declines in procedures at military hospitals would lead to the continuing erosion of skills.Dalton noted that when patients leave military hospitals for civilian care, the military facilities lose the opportunity to treat - and gain experience from - those patients. The procedures also come at a financial cost to the Defense Department, with civilian care, known as "purchased care," representing the largest share of the Pentagon's healthcare spending. The military health system is five years into a health reform initiative that has placed control of military hospitals and clinics under the Defense Health Agency and realigned the services' medical forces to focus on supporting active-duty personnel and operations. As part of the plan, the Army, Navy and Air Force are expected to trim more than 12,000 uniformed medical billets, and non-military patients likely will receive their care either in the community under the Tricare health program or, depending on duty location, by civilian or contract physicians at military facilities. The study authors recommended that the military health system retain patients to ensure that military hospitals can continue to provide high-quality care, focusing on patients whose surgical needs would directly correlate to combat casualty care. They also suggested that partnerships permitting military surgeons to train and work in civilian trauma centers and allowing military facilities to treat civilians for trauma injuries, as is done at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, would help sustain surgeons' skills. In an accompanying commentary, also in JAMA Surgery, Dr. Lesly Dossett and Dr. Justin Dimick of Michigan Medicine said that partnerships don't provide the team training needed for frontline surgical procedures, including anesthesia, nursing and surgical techs."The increasing regionalization of complex surgical procedures and decreased volumes at military treatment facilities may create an environment in which maintaining expeditionary-ready surgeons via an active-duty and military treatment facility-based model is no longer feasible on a large scale," Dossett and Dimick said."Instead, military medicine may need to re-examine the optimal strategy in procuring the services of expeditionary-ready surgical teams, including the broader use of reservists who maintain busy clinical practices while not deployed or the use of civilian contractors, a strategy that has been used for other military support roles," they wrote.Eileen Huck, deputy director for healthcare at the National Military Family Association, said the study illustrates the "complex demands on the military health system" and should be taken seriously by those driving healthcare reform at the Pentagon. Capt. Kyle Christensen and Lisa Whisenhunt perform wisdom teeth extraction at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, April 8, 2015. US Air Force/Airman 1st Class Megan Friedl The Defense Department must balance three priorities, according to Huck: medical care of the force, training of military medical providers, and care for beneficiaries. This study indicates that there is a need for "introspection and analysis," she said."I think it should compel DoD to pause and think before it moves forward with right-sizing," referring to the plan to cut medical billets, Huck said in an interview with Military.com on Friday. "We're restructuring the military treatment facilities, and if we're moving beneficiaries out, what does that do to the patient loads for our providers? How will they be able to maintain their skills and expertise?"For the study, Dalton analyzed the general surgery workload across 147 sites in the military health system and the knowledge, skills and abilities metrics established for deployed surgeons by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the American College of Surgeons. The authors noted that the study may have potentially undercounted case volumes for military surgeons, and they were unable to include surgeries done by military surgeons at civilian facilities, such as those done under partnerships with those facilities. In a report published in August on the military medical personnel force reductions, the Defense Department said it was committed to "adjusting the timing, location and scope of the changes as necessary," depending on availability of care in the community and operational requirements.Pentagon officials said they would hold public forums with beneficiaries before any reductions are made and are subject to pandemic constraints.Read the original article on Business Insider.....»»
