Usually, you can find ideas on their Spotify or social media accounts. Theater Tickets Although the cinema is also great, I’m not talking about the movies. For your friend or family member, it will be an unforgettable experience. Museum, Art Show or Tour Tickets Your gift recipient may not have experienced everything there is to do in a big city — even if they live there. The perfect gift could be tickets to an experience, whether it is a museum or city bus tour or even the aquarium downtown they visited as a kid. Tickets for CityPASS cost more than $40. You can, however, get some ideas of what to buy from the site itself. Annual Magazine Subscription It is likely that there is a magazine dedicated to the hobby of your friend or loved one. Purchasing a hard copy of the current issue will give you something to wrap along with your subscription. For instance, 12 issues of National Geographic for $39, or $20 for Kindle version. Book of the Month A new hardcover title is chosen by the BOTM team every month. If you’d rather skip the month, pick the book you’d like, or let the editors surprise you, you can do so. Adding up to two additional hardcovers to your order is only $9.99 each if you can’t get enough reading material. For 3 months, this will cost you $50. But, this is the gift that keeps giving. Groupon $30 & Under Experiences If you head over to Groupon, you can find a wide range of affordable experiences, including bowling, paintball, whale watching, or art classes. Donation in Their Name You may want to consider giving a charitable gift in honor of somebody who has everything they need. You will most likely receive something nice from a charitable organization for the recipient. It’s an excellent gift for your minimalist friend; you won’t mess up their home. Contribute to a Child’s 529 Make a contribution to the child’s 529 plan. It’ll be necessary to check to see if the parents have set one up, and if they have, you can contribute to the child’s college tuition. Any bit will help, given how expensive school has become these days. There is a tax advantage to setting up a 529 savings account in which the money is invested until the child’s tuition is due. It is possible to set up a 529 for a child without one already in his/her name. But you will need the child’s social security number. FAQs What should I get someone as a gift? If you are looking for a gift for someone, the best advice is to work out your budget within the $40 range and then determine what is still within your price range. After that, knowing the gift recipient and what they like to receive will definitely help. What is proper gift-giving etiquette? Cultures around the world have different protocols for giving gifts. Do not hesitate to ask your in-laws, family, or friends what you should do if they practice gift-giving differently than you do. If you want to know how to behave properly in various cultures, you can always do some research online. As long as your gift is thoughtful and you are genuine in your giving, the receiver will likely be pleased with whatever you give. Who is the recipient? Are they members of your immediate family? Is it a bestie or a new friend? A significant other? A co-worker? A gift’s personality and size will likely be determined by how close you are to the recipient and how close you feel to them. So, even if your new friend needs to relax, you don’t have to book a spa package for them. Stress balls are a good place to start. Is a gift card ever acceptable? Gift certificates that say, “go have a nice dinner at this fancy restaurant,” are definitely acceptable if they are thoughtful. The trick is to choose an amount that won’t force the recipient to spend too much money. However, as long as you keep the recipient’s preferences in mind, your gift should land. You shouldn’t spend more than you can afford. What’s your holiday budget? Choosing the perfect gift also requires knowing your budget – and sticking to it. By doing this, you will know where to shop and what to look for. Don’t forget that buying the perfect gift doesn’t have to break the bank. The truth is that this isn’t always the case. The best gift you can give, besides the affordable items listed as handmade, are gift vouchers. Article by John Rampton, Due About the Author John Rampton is an entrepreneur and connector. Kroger Reports Third Quarter 2022 Results and Raises Full-Year Guidance

Third Quarter Highlights Identical Sales without fuel increased 6.9% Operating Profit of $841 million; Adjusted FIFO Operating Profit of $1,094 million EPS of $0.55; Adjusted EPS of $0.88 Company is executing its go-to-market strategy to deliver value for customers Our Brands identical sales increased 10.4% Digital sales grew 10% Fresh Produce Initiative accelerated with a total of 1,252 stores certified, driving higher identical sales CINCINNATI, Dec. 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) today reported its third quarter 2022 results and will update investors on how Leading with Fresh and Accelerating with Digital continues to position Kroger for long-term sustainable growth. Comments from Chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen "Kroger achieved strong results in the third quarter as we continue to execute our Leading with Fresh and Accelerating with Digital strategy. Our associates are doing an outstanding job delivering a full, fresh and friendly experience across our seamless store and digital ecosystem. Kroger's value proposition, which includes providing great quality, fresh products at affordable prices, data-driven promotions, trusted Our Brands products and an industry-leading fuel rewards program, is resonating with shoppers and driving increased customer loyalty.    This quarter demonstrates the strength of our approach to growing our business. By delivering for our customers, investing in our associates and supporting our communities, we are creating attractive and sustainable total returns for our shareholders." Third Quarter Financial Results 3Q22 ($ in millions; except EPS) 3Q21 ($ in millions; except EPS) ID Sales* (Table 4) 6.9 % 3.1 % EPS $0.55 $0.64 Adjusted EPS (Table 6) $0.88 $0.78 Operating Profit $841 $868 Adjusted FIFO Operating Profit (Table 7) $1,094 $974 FIFO Gross Margin Rate* Decreased 5 basis points OG&A Rate* Decreased 3 basis points *without fuel and adjustment items, if applicable Total company sales were $34.2 billion in the third quarter, compared to $31.9 billion for the same period last year. Excluding fuel, sales increased 6.4% compared to the same period last year. Gross margin was 21.4% of sales for the third quarter. The FIFO gross margin rate, excluding fuel, decreased 5 basis points compared to the same period last year. This result reflected Kroger's ability to effectively manage higher product cost inflation and shrink through strong sourcing practices, while also helping customers manage their budgets and keeping prices competitive. The LIFO charge for the quarter was $152 million, compared to a LIFO charge of $93 million for the same period last year, driven by higher product cost inflation primarily in grocery. The Operating, General & Administrative rate decreased 3 basis points, excluding fuel and adjustment items, compared to the same period last year. The decrease in OG&A rate was driven by sales leverage and the continued execution of cost savings initiatives partially offset by investments in associates. Rent and depreciation as a rate to sales, excluding fuel, decreased 9 basis points due to sales leverage. Capital Allocation Strategy Kroger continues to generate strong free cash flow and remains committed to investing in the business to drive long-term sustainable net earnings growth, as well as maintaining its current investment grade debt rating. The Company will continue to pay its quarterly dividend and expects this to increase over time, subject to board approval. Kroger has already paused its share repurchase program to prioritize de-leveraging following the proposed merger with Albertsons. Kroger's net total debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio is 1.61, compared to 1.68 a year ago (Table 5). The company's net total debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio target range is 2.30 to 2.50. 2022 Guidance Comments from CFO Gary Millerchip "Kroger's focus on delivering value for customers and our disciplined approach to managing costs in an inflationary environment led to another quarter of strong results. Our consistent execution of our go-to-market strategy continues to build momentum in our business results and gives us the confidence to raise our full-year guidance. We now expect identical sales without fuel to be in the range of 5.1% to 5.3% and adjusted net earnings per diluted share to be in the range of $4.05 to $4.15.  The resiliency of Kroger's value creation model positions us well to navigate different operating environments, and as we look forward, we remain confident in our ability to deliver attractive and sustainable total shareholder returns for investors." Burger King"s owner just opened a delivery-focused food hall where customers can order from Popeyes, Firehouse Subs, and other chains. The company is one of many expanding the ghost kitchen model to reach more diners.

These nontraditional ghost kitchens are looking to expand and raise funds in a hot sector that's expected to be a $1 trillion opportunity by 2030. Hungry House is opening a second location this year in New York. The first one, shown, opened last year in Brooklyn.Nancy Luna/Insider New ghost kitchens are upending the traditional model of renting out kitchens or franchising brands. Burger King's owner recently opened its first ghost kitchen, or digital food hall, in Miami. Meet 7 nontraditional ghost kitchen models.  Ghost kitchens flourished during the pandemic. The model helps restaurants meet the growing demand for food delivery with few upfront costs. Now, ghost kitchens are entering a new phase. Startups and established companies are upending the traditional model of simply renting out kitchen space or franchising brands.Hungry House in Brooklyn, New York, for example, uses "digitally" native chef influencers to create its menu. Through a licensing agreement, Combo Kitchen works with well-recognized restaurant brands like Saladworks and places their menus in outside restaurants. BLT Kitchens incubates and tests brands before turning them into brick-and-mortar restaurants. And recently, the parent of Burger King, Restaurant Brands International, opened its first ghost kitchen in Miami. Billed as a digital-first food hall by RBI, Kitchens You Love, or KYLO Food Hall allows delivery and walk-in customers to bundle menus into one order from RBI brands such as Popeyes and Burger King. These companies are intentionally differentiating themselves from more established ghost-kitchen companies as the space has become crowded and legacy companies have faced a host of challenges.  Reef Technology has struggled with profitability amid VC pressure to grow rapidly, and CloudKitchens — which Travis Kalanick, the founder of Uber, leads — has faced lawsuits and a talent exodus. On November 1, CloudKitchens laid off some staff.Still, the ghost-kitchen model has fans in both restaurant and investment spaces. For John Meyer, the ghost-kitchen craze has been beneficial to his startup, Ghost Financial. The Texas-based company offers fintech services and educational classes to virtual brands and ghost-kitchen operators looking to kick-start their delivery-focused businesses. "The ghost-kitchen explosion of COVID — and the people ordering takeout — has not stopped," Meyer — who operates his own virtual restaurant, Keto Kitchen, out of a CloudKitchens facility in Austin, Texas — said. Michael Schaefer, a food-and-beverage analyst at Euromonitor who spoke at the second annual Ghost Kitchen Conference in Dallas last week, said the ghost-kitchen and virtual-brand market has grown into a "multibillion-dollar" opportunity. It has the potential to become a $1-trillion global sector by 2030.  Ghost-kitchen startup Hungry House allows customers to order via kiosks, as well as delivery.Nancy Luna/InsiderHungry HouseCEO: Kristen BarnettLaunched: 2021Headquartered: New York CityFunding: Undisclosed pre-seed round last summer from Wilshire Lane Partners, an early-stage venture fund. The startup is expected to announce a new round of funding later this summer or in the fall, Barnett told Insider. Growth: The first location launched in Brooklyn in November 2021. A second Hungry House opened in the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Barnett previously held leadership roles at the ghost-kitchen startup Zuul Kitchens and the New York-based healthy fast-casual chain Dig. After Kitchen United bought Zuul, Barnett struck out on her own and created Hungry House. The startup combines her passion for menu engineering and supply chain with her love of food technology, she said. Hungry House develops its frequently changing menu with the help of "digitally native chefs" who are influencers on social-media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.Hungry House licenses the rights to the brands, and Barnett and her team engineer the menu for profitability and delivery consistency. Hungry House offers these influencer recipes under one menu, which is available for delivery or walk-up ordering via a kiosk at its Brooklyn location and soon-to-be new Manhattan location. Combo Kitchen works with well-recognized restaurant brands like Saladworks and places their menu in mom-and-pop restaurants.Combo KitchenCombo KitchenCEO: Hossein KasmaiHeadquartered: Miami, FloridaLaunched: 2020Funding: Looking for investors for first round of fundraising.Growth: 200 locations worldwide Combo Kitchen is a division of Franchise Creator, a consulting firm that helps businesses grow through franchising. As the CEO of Franchise Creator, Kasmai is bringing franchising to the world of ghost kitchens by partnering with well-recognized restaurant brands and placing their menus in smaller mom-and-pop restaurants, which can offer the additional menus for delivery and take-out.By working with well-established brands that consumers know like Saladworks, Kasmai said "little to no marketing is needed." Combo Kitchen also partners with well-recognized celebrities to launch new food brands under their name. "We feel that brands associated with A-rated celebrities also have the same marketing advantage," Kasmai told Insider.     Kasmai believes his model has an advantage over ghost kitchens like Reef, which hires cooks to prepare licensed menus inside food trailers."As opposed to the Reef model, you have experienced restaurant operators preparing food for these larger brands for take-out and delivery," Kasmai told Insider. By using existing kitchen space and employees, Kasmai said his model allows restaurants to earn revenue without investing in additional labor or rent. Combo Kitchen takes a percentage of sales, or a royalty fee, and shares it with partners like Saladworks. That fee is different for each partner, but is generally 7% or higher,  Kasmai said.  This OSK partner restaurant, Broadway Sandwich Market, prepares multiple menus out of one kitchen. One Stop KitchenOne Stop KitchenCEO: Vijayaraj Gopinath Launched:  November 2021Headquartered:  Sunnyvale, CaliforniaFunding: Raised $2 million in early seed round, including backing by Y Combinator. Raising funds now for Series A.Growth: 14 locations in the Bay Area One Stop Kitchen works with restaurants that act as "fulfillment centers." These fulfillment centers are typically mom-and-pop restaurants in downtowns and high walk-in-traffic locations that use their existing kitchens to prepare 10 or more different menus from one location for delivery, pickup, or dine-in. Consumers ordering from these restaurants can mix and match food in a single order from popular local dine-in restaurants such as Walia Ethiopian Cuisine and Punjab Café."It's like a virtual food court," Viggnesh Kandasamy, the cofounder and chief technology officer of One Stop Kitchen,  told Insider. One Stop Kitchen does not use licensing or franchising as part of its model. It acts as a matchmaker, pairing a fulfillment kitchen with multiple brands."We pay the brands based on the volume and we pay our fulfillment centers a certain commision or fixed cost from the orders," Kandasamy said, describing how each business makes money.  Franklin Junction's executive team includes CEO Rishi Nigam, second from left.Franklin JunctionFranklin JunctionCEO: Rishi NigamLaunched: 2020Headquartered: AtlantaFunding: Undisclosed Growth: More than 500 restaurants and hotels under contract. About half are active as Host Kitchens.Franklin Junction matches underutilized restaurants, which it calls Host Kitchens, with restaurant brands looking for rapid expansion through delivery. Each restaurant benefits because it involves "capital-free revenue growth for both partners," Nigam told Insider."Host Kitchens," which the company trademarked, make money by using their extra kitchen capacity.Franklin Junction works with about 30 brands such as Nathan's Famous, Hooters, and David Chang's Fuku. Host Kitchens are typically small-to-midsize restaurant chains, hotels, family-entertainment centers, and grocery stores. "You have to be top-level executors and have availability of scale to support big brands and the big sales that come with them," Nigam said, adding that Frisch's Big Boy is an example of a multi-unit Host Kitchen site.Franklin Junction owns the revenue from each sale, and then pays everyone else a cut, Nigam said. "We're paying the delivery companies a delivery fee. We're paying the brands a royalty or a license fee. We're paying the host kitchens a portion to cook the food," he said.  Wonder is part ghost kitchen, part food delivery van, part meal-kit provider.WonderWonderMajority owner: Marc LoreLaunched: December 2021Headquartered: New YorkFunding: Closed a $350 million funding round in June.Growth: Since launching six months ago, Wonder is now available in 22 towns in New Jersey, serving about 130,000 households.Wonder is part ghost kitchen, part food-delivery van, part meal-kit provider. Its owner, Marc Lore, previously launched Jet.com, which Walmart later bought.Wonder brings chef-driven meals to consumers' doorsteps by cooking them in a fleet of vans that roam neighborhoods. These ghost kitchens on wheels, outfitted with cooking equipment and chefs, can be hailed through an app."Wonder has a real opportunity to not only completely change how people eat, but also to create a better future with access to the world's best food in a convenient, affordable, and sustainable way," Lore said in a LinkedIn post, announcing the Series B round. Wonder has 19 mobile restaurants serving upper-middle-class neighborhoods of New Jersey meals from Bar Nakazawa, Nancy Silverton's Pizzeria Mozza, Bobby Flay Steak, Chios Taverna by Michael Symon, Di Fara Pizza, and Tejas Barbecue.BLT Kitchens has about 100 tenants at its two ghost kitchen locations in Arizona.BLT KitchensBLT Kitchens Cofounder: Tommy D'AmbrosioLaunched: 2020Headquarters: Phoenix, ArizonaFunding: Bootstrapped so far. Currently looking for funding.Growth: Two locations in Mesa and Phoenix, Arizona. BLT Kitchens rents spaces to about 100 tenants, which include food truck owners, virtual brands, and caterers looking for an approved and permitted site to prepare their food. These tenants sell food for delivery and pickup. D'Ambrosio said restaurateurs use BLT Kitchen to incubate or test brands that might be worth turning into a brick-and-mortar restaurant or a permanent food truck. D'Ambrosio previously tested interest in his Phoenix-based restaurant, Aioli Gourmet Burgers. The company owns ghost kitchen facilities in Mesa and Phoenix, Arizona that range in size from 10,000 to 14,000 square feet and include food trucks. Burger King's owner opened KYLO Food Hall in Miami.RBIKYLO Food Hall CEO: José Cil Launched: Fall 2022Headquartered:  Miami, FloridaFunding: n/aGrowth: One location, so far, at 50 West Flagler Street in downtown Miami.RBI, the owner of Popeyes and Firehouse Subs, recently opened KYLO Food Hall inside a former Burger King restaurant. The company, which ended its partnership with Miami-based Reef Technology this year, is not labeling the facility as a ghost kitchen. However, the food hall prepares multiple menus for delivery and takeout similar to walk-in food halls run by Kitchen United and Hungry House. The facility is equipped with kiosks for walk-in orders. The menu features food from Burger King, Popeyes, Firehouse Subs, Spris Artisan Pizza, Ms. Cheezious, and Sergio's Cuban American Kitchen. To entice new customers, RBI said KYLO will be offering two exclusive mashup menu items at the food hall: a sandwich pizza by Popeyes and Spris Artisan Pizza and a shortrib melt collaboration from Burger King and Ms. Cheezious. Are you a ghost-kitchen insider with insight to share? Retail by MONA, the leasing and advisory firm guiding tenants and landlords through an evolving retail landscape, announced the top-producing food and beverage brokerage team led by Alexandra Turboff has joined the firm. Ms. Turboff, who was previously a partner at Branded Concept Development (BCD) – recently acquired by RIPCO — joins Retail by MONA as Executive Vice President. Former associate partners at BCD, Jason Lloyd and Marisa Simkin, will join the firm as Senior Associates. “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome this high-profile team, with its extensive and diverse experience in the food and beverage space, to the MONA family,” said Brandon Singer, CEO of Retail by MONA. “Their collective expertise is incredible and will add a new dimension to our team as we navigate the challenges and opportunities of the ever-evolving retail landscape.” Ms. Turboff is nationally recognized for her career in the F&B sector, with experience in all aspects of the business, from real estate strategy and site acquisition through to construction management and operations.  She began her career at BCD in 2003 working with franchisees such as Quiznos. Over the years she worked with many well-known brands including Mexicue, Boqueria, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Tacombi, Ippudo, Joe’s Pizza, Daily Provisions, Burger & Lobster, Joe Coffee, The Meatball Shop, Toby’s Estate, Shelsky’s, La Pecora Bianca, Wagamama, and Veggie Grill.  Notable deals over the years have included Tacombi at Empire State Building, Naya at Moynihan Station and recently Luke’s Lobster and Bourke Street Bakery at Grand Central Terminal.  She was elevated to partner at BCD in 2021. “I’ll always be grateful for the mentorship during my tenure at BCD and the exposure to this sector, but the time was right for me to have my own professional renaissance,” said Turboff. “It’s important to me to have a real voice at the table in terms of helping to grow the business, and Brandon [Singer] has been not only welcoming of my input, but appreciative of the perspective and experience I bring.  As I considered the opportunities available to me, the MONA culture, along with the strength of its portfolio and clients, really stood out.” From learning the tenant-rep side of the business to navigating the nuances of the sector — including New York City code requirements and legal implications specific to food and beverage operations. Ms. Turboff also has deep experience working with architects, expeditors and attorneys. Her knowledge of the build-out process and the potential construction and permitting challenges restaurateurs face when opening new locations is invaluable in any retail environment.  Most recently, she brought Stand Up Burgers to 1004 2nd Ave., struck a deal on behalf of Corner Table Restaurants (operator of The Smith) for a new smaller-format concept on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and has negotiated several ISLA and Hole in the Wall locations on behalf of Parched Hospitality Group in NYC, Miami, Atlanta and Dallas. “There is a dearth of good second-generation restaurant spaces in NYC,” continued Turboff. “There are many new, and old, players vying for the same spaces and the cost of opening a restaurant is exceedingly high which, when combined with ever-slimmer margins, makes it increasingly risky for restaurateurs.” “Tenants need a specialist who knows the right questions to ask throughout the site selection process in order to maximize value,” said Singer. “Alex, Jason and Marisa will bring all of that and more to MONA and our landlord and tenant clients.” Team member Jason Lloyd brings significant firsthand knowledge of the food and beverage industry, having spent nearly two decades as an operator, investor, consultant and chef.  Prior to joining BCD Jason co-founded Cow & Clover, a 110-seat restaurant, bar, and event space located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As Managing Partner, he grew the business into one of Brooklyn’s most popular brunch spots and, in 2018, orchestrated a successful exit, partnering with the Fornino Restaurant Group.  He joined BCD as Manager of Real Estate in 2018 and became Associate Partner in 2021. Recently, Jason has worked on deals on behalf of Veselka, Everytable and Andrew Tarlow. Marisa Simkin spent her early career in hospitality – including positions at Peet’s Coffee & Tea and Plan Check Kitchen & Bar in Los Angeles. She joined BCD as a Project Manager in 2019 and moved to the real estate team in 2020 where she collected and analyzed market information and participated in lease negotiations on behalf of clients including Stand Up Burgers, HAGS, Bourke Street Bakery, Yellow Rose and Chinah. Benett / Contributor / Getty Images Geranium in Copenhagen, Denmark, has been named the world's best restaurant. The World's 50 Best Restaurants announced its annual rankings on Monday in London. Russian restaurants were notably absent from the list. The best restaurant in the world is Copenhagen's Geranium, according to the World's 50 Best Restaurants annual rankings. The restaurant follows in the footsteps of fellow Danish eatery, Noma, which claimed the title last year. The rankings were announced on Monday at an awards show hosted by Stanley Tucci in London.Geranium has a somewhat usual location. After relocating from King's Garden in 2007, it set up shop in 2010 on the eighth floor of the city's national soccer stadium, overlooking Fælledparken gardens.Since opening its doors to the public, Geranium also became the first Danish restaurant to win three Michelin stars.Throughout 2022, Geranium has been serving a meatless menu for the first time. Rasmus Kofoed, Geranium's head chef, stopped eating meat five years ago. This year, Geranium's menu has focused on local vegetables and seafood from organic and biodynamic farms in Denmark and other parts of Scandinavia, according to its website.Russian restaurants were notably absent from this year's list. In 2021, two Moscow restaurants made it onto the list, in 25th and 30th place. Organizers of the awards responded swiftly to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. They announced that they were moving the awards from their original location in Moscow to London. However, as the voting took place before the war in Ukraine, Russian votes were included, the director of content for World's 50 Best Restaurants William Drew, told Bloomberg.American honorees in the top 30 included New York-based restaurants Atomix and Le Bernardin.Read the original article on Business Insider.....»»
