I tried two of the most popular meditation apps, Headspace and Calm, for a week. One app was the clear winner for starting my workday with focus and mindfulness.

Between Headspace and Calm, one meditation app reigned supreme with greater variety, actionable insights, and more to start the day with mindfulness. I put the popular meditation apps Headspace and Calm to the test to see which worked better for me. Calm was the clear winner in giving me a better meditation experience to begin my day. Here's why. See more stories on Insider's business page. I've often heard people tout the benefits of meditation, but I'd never tried it myself. Having worked remotely for roughly a year and a half now, like millions of other people, I've settled into a pretty calcified morning routine at home.So I decided to finally give meditation a shot, both to change up my routine a bit and to see if it would give me more focus and clarity throughout the day, as so many people who meditate report feeling. I'd heard good things about Headspace and Calm, which are two of the most popular meditation apps on the market, so I put both apps to the test. After two weeks, one spent using each app, I found that Calm was better by a long shot. Here's how Headspace and Calm stacked up for me: On Day 1 of Headspace, I followed the default morning routine from the "Today" section of the app. Headspace It included three steps: a short breathing exercise, the morning video of the day, and a meditation. The breathing exercise was simple enough: Take a few deep breaths. Headspace Next up on the morning agenda was The Wake Up. Headspace This is Headspace's daily bite-sized video series. Then, I did the third and final step of the morning routine: the daily meditation. Headspace I've listened to several of Headspace's daily meditations since this one, and overall I found them kind of disappointing. Headspace meditations offered much less to keep your attention, so I found my mind frequently wandering off. For example, Headspace's daily meditations don't tend to have things like anecdotes, quotes, or action steps, unlike what Calm offers. (More on that later.)Because there is less variety across the daily meditations, they started to feel very repetitive and monotonous. I started to feel that if I'd done one, I'd done them all. One bright spot, though, was that the app lets you choose between teachers for many meditations, including this one. Headspace I didn't like one teacher over another, but having the option could be useful for those who find they do respond better to one particular teacher's style. You're also able to choose the duration of the daily meditation. This flexibility is probably one of my favorite parts of Headspace, but it doesn't entirely work as advertised. Headspace I expected the duration of the meditation would be exactly three, five, 10, 15, or 20 minutes, depending on what I chose. In the time I've used Headspace so far, though, I've found that the time a meditation actually takes almost never matches the duration you choose. For example, if you select three minutes, the meditation can really end up being nearly five minutes, which is the next duration option. This discrepancy never affected me, but it might affect a Headspace user on a really tight schedule. On Day 2 of Headspace, I checked out what was under the "Meditate" tab of the app. Headspace Even my cursory scroll through the "Beginning meditation" section gave me some valuable information about the different techniques common in many meditations, for example. Throughout the week, I increasingly found that one bright spot of using Headspace is that it's very beginner-friendly. Before long, I had wound up looking at Headspace's course library. Headspace I liked that you can filter your search based on emotions or areas of your life that you'd like to work on; I also appreciated the fact that Headspace has courses for such a wide variety of topics.  Headspace's library is also a great showcase of what I think is one of the app's strongest assets: its look. Headspace Headspace's visuals are clean, colorful, and fairly minimalist. After some digging around, I settled on one of the courses in the "Focus at Work" section: Productivity. Headspace Besides courses, the Focus at Work section also includes single meditations, music designed to promote focus, and animations showing techniques at work for Headspace's cute characters. There's also a small subsection here that's designed to help students. Overall, I was disappointed with the first lesson. Headspace I found that very little of the session was actually specific to productivity and, if you took out those few minutes, you could have easily believed the session was about any number of other topics. To Headspace's credit, I did feel slightly more focused after the session, and I only tried out one of the 10, so I certainly couldn't have expected a miracle from that alone. Also, Headspace often says one of the ways you can improve your meditation is to simply do it over and over again, so repetition is part of the process.Regardless, I found the first lesson nearly indistinguishable from many of the other Headspace courses I went on to try later. I skipped over the "Sleep" tab in the app because my main goal with my meditation experiment was to better start my days, not end them. Headspace However, a quick lookover of the tab shows a variety of options, including wind-down exercises, stories, sleep music tracks, and even soundscapes of things like forests and flowing water. The dark mode was also a nice touch to help prepare your eyes for rest. The following day, I detoured from strict meditations. Headspace At this point, the meditations I'd tried thus far were pretty stationary; you were meant to be sitting still while you followed them. On this day, however, I turned to the "Move" tab on the app to see if something a little more active would help me start my workday better.  I browsed some of Headspace's yoga classes designed to get you up and at it in the mornings. Headspace I ended up trying out a 10-minute class called "Rise and Shine." Headspace Unsurprisingly, this class gave me a bigger burst of energy for the day than did any of the stationary meditations from my previous two days on Headspace.There was also peaceful ambient music in the background that really added to the atmosphere of the video, which somehow succeeded in being both calming and energizing. By Day 4, I had reached the last of the app's tabs: Focus. Headspace I decided to try some of the music intended to promote focus. I should note here that these offerings, as well as some others on different tabs, have since changed in the app. Many of the listings are still there, just under different categories.  As a fan of several of Hans Zimmer's film scores, I decided to give his playlist a listen. Headspace I ended up breezing through the playlist and working the full 85 minutes uninterrupted. I was shocked to see that all that time had passed once the music stopped, and I definitely didn't feel as though I'd been working for as long as I had. Since then, I've come back to this playlist and a few others from the list several times, always to great effect. On my fifth and final day of using Headspace, I stayed on the Focus tab, this time browsing a series of exercises. Headspace I ended up trying a very fitting course aimed at helping you start the day while you're working from home. Headspace While the session was, again, quite repetitive of other meditations I'd previously done on Headspace, it was moderately effective for me in keeping distractions at bay.Overall, my experience with Headspace was decent. My biggest gripe with the app is that too many of its meditations were too similar. This sameness gave me little to look forward to when I opened the app each morning, and it definitely didn't help with keeping my mind on task.Ironically, my favorite parts of the meditation app were the ones that weren't meditation at all; I really enjoyed the active movement sessions and the focus music playlists. Despite its flaws, Headspace is a good place to start for those interested in meditation.  For Week 2 of my meditation experiment, I turned my attention to Calm. Calm When you first open Calm, it asks what goals you'd like to focus on while using the app. I ticked off all of the goals to get a fuller picture of everything the app has to offer. The onboarding also asks what type of clips you'd most like to see when using Calm. Calm Lastly, Calm asks about your level of familiarity with meditation. Calm I liked that the app asked this question, so it can make recommendations with your experience level in mind.  Once I answered these questions, I was shown the home page of the app. Calm The first thing that struck me was the sound in the background. By default, the app plays flowing water sounds while you're in it, though you can turn off the sounds in the settings. I found the sounds to be a really nice, calming addition that helped me start my experience with Calm on the right foot.Visually, I also really liked Calm's deep blue hue compared to Headspace's stark white color. The water sounds continued playing into the first meditation I tried, which was part of the app's everyday series, Daily Calm. Calm It seemed to me that there were longer silences in some of the Calm meditations than the Headspace ones, and I found that the water sounds helped me stay focused on the meditation during these silences rather than having my mind wander.I also liked that this meditation included an anecdote and a quote to illustrate a few points. Simple additions like these made Calm's meditations seem tailored to their themes, and they would have gone a long way in creating more variety among meditations on Headspace.  The next day, I listened to an episode in a different Calm series, the Daily Trip. Calm This installment focused on a message that Headspace and Calm often stress: When you're faced with distractions, it can sometimes be helpful to simply notice they're there, rather than engage or fixate on them. On Day 3, I looked through Calm's catalog of meditations and decided on a series called Mindfulness at Work. Calm The first lesson was called Productivity, just like the series I started on Day 2 of my Headspace week.As with Headspace, a lot of the lesson was spent in silence, focusing on deep breathing and paying attention to what you're feeling one moment at a time. But in the few minutes that the instructor talked about productivity at work, I think Calm won out. Calm's insights seemed to be more specific and more relatable, sending you away with more practicable takeaways for your workday.  On Day 4, I looked through Calm's movement-based sessions. Calm This is one arena where Headspace seems to have Calm beat — Headspace had a far greater variety of sessions focused on getting active. I followed a simple morning stretch exercise. Calm Again, Headspace seemed to edge out Calm in this department. In the Headspace yoga session I did, the instructor did the stretches alongside you. In this Calm session, there was no video component; the instructor verbally walked you through the stretches. On my last day on Calm, I looked through the series that were recommended to me based on the goals I selected when I first downloaded the app. Calm I decided to give the "Improve Focus" series a shot. Calm It included things like master classes, breathing exercises, music playlists, and soundscapes, as well as bite-sized conversations through a series called The Spark. In keeping with my choice on Headspace, I also listened to a few playlists designed to promote focus. Calm I felt just as focused listening to Calm's playlists as I did listening to Headspace's music. However, Calm has a bigger selection of music and a longer roster of big-name artists. Besides focus music, Calm's Sleep Remix series, for example, includes deconstructed, slowed versions of songs from musicians like Ariana Grande, Post Malone, Shawn Mendes, and Kacey Musgraves. Overall, Calm was the clear winner for me. Calm Calm had more variety across all of its offerings, as well as more relatable and actionable insights in its meditations.Even for the sessions I didn't test on either app, Calm seemed to take the cake. For sleep, for example, Calm has stories read by names like Regé-Jean Page, Matthew McConaughey, Laura Dern, and Harry Styles. Headspace was not without its perks, though. Its flexibility in allowing you to pick your teacher and your meditation duration, for example, was a plus. In careers as in romance, a happy and successful relationship depends on finding a good match - and one match is not the same as another.The labor market, as Insider's Juliana Kaplan writes, is seeing a major mismatch of skills, geographies, and expectations, which is leading companies across the US to complain of a labor shortage as millions of people actively look for work.One result of this matching problem is a phenomenon that's familiar to anyone who's tried to find a romantic partner in the past decade or so: ghosting. Instead of having an uncomfortable "it's you not me" breakup conversation, a person quietly stops responding and disappears.While job applicants say employers have a long history of ghosting them instead of offering a clear rejection, employers have more recently begun to worry about ghosting by prospective and newly hired employees.Regardless of how things got to this point, it's a complicated problem that is having very real financial and psychological consequences for the people on both sides of the bargaining table, not to mention the wider circle of coworkers, families, and customers who rely on these jobs getting done.Long before Daniel Kahneman was a Nobel Prize-winning psychology professor, he was a lieutenant in the Israeli army in the 1950's, where he was tasked with finding a better way to assign new recruits to suitable teams.In short, he was a matchmaker.Recently, Kahneman shared his insights on hiring practices with the Wall Street Journal, saying that the traditional approach most organizations have been using is "not the best way of doing things."With the caveat that "I am not an expert," Kahneman shared several ways companies could do a better of hiring for roles at all levels from entry-level to CEO.The first aspect of Kahneman's approach is to focus on the attributes that are relevant and necessary for the job, giving those attributes a numeric score, such as a ten-point ranking."Pick maybe half a dozen traits needed to succeed, whether punctuality, technical skill, even anger management. Then think of questions that can help you determine if candidates have these attributes," he said.In addition, while cognitive intelligence is clearly a valuable trait, Kahneman says what matters more is whether someone can actually do the work. For that, he recommends including tests or samples of the kinds of tasks that will be part of the job.By emphasizing consistent metrics and tests that are relevant to the actual work, recruiters are able to compare applicants more evenly. Kahneman also recommends hiring managers keep an open mind throughout the process until they've gathered the necessary data to make an informed decision, at which point they should act decisively."Simon would tell you to hire the first candidate to pass your criteria," Kahneman said, in reference to economist and psychologist Herbert Simon. "You're not really looking for the absolute best because that would take too long."A more systematic and focused approach can help hiring managers make better decisions more quickly, Kahneman says, but there's still an inherent risk that simply cannot be avoided."Good interviews might improve the likelihood you'll be right say from 50% to 60%. If you can go to 65%, it is wonderful," he said. But enhanced unemployment has expired and it hasn't helped end end the labor crunch. Insider spoke to five economists and experts about why workers aren't coming back, and the issues with hiring. See more stories on Insider's business page. America is tired of labor shortages. September was supposed to be the silver bullet month when the end of enhanced unemployment benefits coincided with schools and other childcare services reopening and vaccination rates facilitating a return to office. But if you're not back at work, you're far from the only one.That's because the reality of September could perhaps be summarized in two words: Womp womp. There's another two words, nearly as fearsome: The month told a "Delta story," according to Jesse Wheeler, an economic analyst at Morning Consult."We're still expecting this improvement in jobs and continued economic recovery in the future, but it's basically just on hold," Wheeler said.So if you haven't returned to work yet, or are mulling whether a return to work is the right move right now, you're not alone. In a note released this week, JPMorgan found that just half of the people who lost jobs during COVID are going back to work.As Bloomberg reports, unemployment benefits winding down didn't compel people back into the workforce, echoing several studies showing no connection. Schools are contending with Delta waves and temporarily shuttering. Childcare is facing its own labor shortage, turning away families who need care. Vaccinations are up, but mass vaccine mandates for businesses only recently become a reality."I don't see evidence that the slowing of growth had to do with labor shortages. It had to do with Delta," Heidi Shierholz, the president of the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute, told Insider. She added: "Employers really were demanding a lot fewer people in August than they had in the prior month."Insider spoke to five economists and experts about the current messy state of the labor market, and why it makes sense some people haven't returned yet. At the heart of the current labor crunch are major disconnects - what economists call "mismatches" - between what employers want and the people who could fill those roles. Some have moved out of areas where there's need; others have higher expectations for work. But employers are responsible for another mismatch: They say they're scrambling to find workers but they're not willing to pay the price labor is demanding right now. Hiring is a messAs Vox's Rani Molla and Emily Stewart report, the hiring system is a little bit broken too. The current labor market has an "incongruity" between what job seekers are hearing about the abundance of roles, and their actual experiences, according to Vox. It might be a fourth more subtle mismatch.For one, The Wall Street Journal reports that some applicants may be filtered out by the hiring software many employers have adopted. If your resume doesn't have the exact keyword, or, like many workers, you're trying to switch into a related role, you may not even make it past the initial screening.One criterion that employers are filtering by: Whether applicants have a college degree. That could leave out the 70 million workers who are "STARs" - Skilled Through Alternative Routes, according to Papia Debroy, the senior vice president of insights at Opportunity@Work. According to the Census Bureau, two-thirds of American workers don't have a bachelor's degree, with that percentage coming in higher for Black and Hispanic workers.Debroy said that STARs have been increasingly locked out of middle wage jobs in the past decades - roles that are crucial for them to move up the ladder."In many respects, not recognizing that skills are being gained through alternative routes is not just failing these workers. It's failing employers from finding the talent they're looking for, but also it's preventing further mobility for this population," Debroy said. Erica Groshen, senior economics advisor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and the former commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, told Insider that employers may not be working rapidly to actually fill the record number of job openings."They may say, 'Well, we have an opening and we have it listed,' but they may not be rushing to fill it if they're not sure how the pandemic is playing out in their area," Groshen said. "So they may leave the posting up, but not be rushing."There's still the pandemic to consider In July, Morning Consult found that 3.5 million of the people who left the labor force were planning on returning to work in the next year; two-thirds wanted to start working again within three months."However, a few months later, a lot of those people have put it on hold," Morning Consult's Wheeler said. The intelligence firm's September outlook found that consumer sentiment in August reached its lowest levels since February 2021.That's because taking a job right now still faces all of the calculations of the health risks and childcare considerations of the pandemic, which many assumed would have been resolved by now. It's what Shierholz calls "baby echoes" of the early days of the pandemic. There is, of course, something we have now that we didn't at the start of the pandemic: Vaccines. But, as Insider's Aylin Woodward reports, the US has fallen behind in vaccination rates, ranking 39th in the world. "In places where the pandemic is still hitting a lot of people with low vaccination rates, that might still be keeping some people home," Brian Riedl, a budget expert at the right-leaning Manhattan Institute, told Insider. "The states that are relatively unvaccinated and seeing more Delta variant cases still may see a lag." As President Joe Biden continues to ramp up vaccination efforts and the Delta wave subsides, people might return more. JPMorgan anticipates that 2 million Americans "will continue to drift back into employment," especially as their pandemic savings dwindle.In the meantime, businesses have turned toward one method to make the return pay off for workers: Raising wages. "There's always somebody talking about there being a labor shortage, and yet in a free market economy, the price is supposed to make the adjustments so that the quantity demanded will meet the quantity supplied," Groshen said. "What they're really saying is that I'm not offering enough to get the workers I need."Anecdotally, it seems to be working. The New York Times reported that Jason Hammel, a chef in Chicago, raised base pay to $18 to $24 per hour; he said he hasn't had issues hiring. But some restaurants have raised wages and still haven't seen applicants flooding in, Insider's Grace Dean reported. Groshen said that offering more doesn't just encompass wages - it's working conditions and benefits, too. Meet the entrepreneur planning to build the "McDonald"s" of plant-based burgers

Steele Smiley has 20 years of experience in the wellness industry. His latest act: tapping into the millennial and Gen Z plant-based food market. Steele Smiley, founder of fast casual restaurants Crisp & Green and Stalk & Spade. Crisp & Green Entrepreneur Steele Smiley aims to build America's first plant-based burger chain, Stalk & Spade. Along with his other fast-casual restaurant, Crisp & Green, Smiley is tapping into a healthy eating market dominated by millennials and Gen Z. He spoke with Insider about how the pandemic has shifted people's mindset toward wellness. See more stories on Insider's business page. Steele Smiley will be the first to tell you he runs his life like he's in the military.That involves 20 workouts a week, three times a day: Running in the morning, a yoga or boxing class during the day, and lifting weights at night. Since that doesn't seem to satisfy all his energy, Smiley also juggles two Minnesota-based fast-casual restaurants. In 2016, he opened Stalk & Spade, which serves up salads, grain bowls, smoothies, and free workout classes. Five years later (in the midst of the pandemic) he launched Crisp & Green with a plant-based-only menu. He's expanded both brands in the south and Midwest, bucking conventional health hubs like LA and NYC in favor of an edge in less competitive markets."We intend to become the first franchisable plant-based burger chain in the country," Smiley told Insider, billing it as the plant-based version of McDonald's.It's a bold statement, but the 43-year-old serial entrepreneur has 20 years in the fitness industry under his belt. While he declined to share revenue numbers, analytics verified by Insider showed that Crisp & Green digital orders increased from 9% of its total orders in January 2020 to more than 70% in April when the pandemic hit, where they've stayed ever since. Stalk & Spade launched in May. Stalk & Spade In 2021 alone, Crisp & Green expanded from five states to 12, with several locations in the Sun Belt, an area seeing explosive growth before and during the pandemic. Smiley said the chain is nearing 100 stores in 14 states, with new locations opening every 6.8 days. Overall, however, the restaurant scene has been struggling. Last August, before widespread vaccination, the fast casual space was down 12%, according to figures from foodservice data platform Technomic. While consumer spending in restaurants rose this year compared to last, recovery hasn't yet snapped back to pre-pandemic traffic levels. Restaurants are still contending with issues like labor shortages and shorter hours.Still, the wellness economy is worth $1.5 trillion, according to McKinsey, and Smiley is betting he can tap into that, especially since the pandemic has prompted many people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Plant-based diets, which nearly 10 million Americans follow, are gaining traction. The market is growing, expected to exceed $74 billion by 2021."The next evolution of healthy eating is plant-based eating," Smiley said. "Within a decade, people will choose the plant-based alternatives of the traditional meat they eat today."Move over, SweetgreenSmiley had just $765 in his bank account when he kicked off his career in 2004 with his boutique studio STEELE Fitness. In 2013, he had just landed a major partnership with Under Armour when he sold his business to international wellness company Lift Brands Global. He joined the parent company as a senior executive.He launched Crisp & Green in November 2016, which he juggled while working for Lift Brands for five months before going full-time. "I would work during the day at my first big business, and at night I would put on a Crisp & Green t-shirt and work at my restaurant," Smiley said.Smiley said he'd always wanted to launch multiple businesses in multiple industries. Evolving his career from fitness to healthy eating was only a natural next step."The opportunity that I felt was staring me in the face was food," he said. "In fitness, I taught people that the hour you work out can only be so impactful. The other 23 hours of a day, you can help people understand how to make the right food choices." Crisp & Green offers free fitness classes in addition to its salad and smoothie menu. Crisp & Green Those who perhaps best understood this pre-pandemic were young, healthy women, whom Steele would often see walking through Crisp & Green's doors.His brands certainly have Gen Z and millennial written all over them. The two generations helped grow the global healthy eating and nutrition economy to $704 billion and are leading the way in plant-based eating. Millennials, dubbed "the wellness generation," are especially more health-conscious and more willing to spend on healthy food and fitness than their parents.For them, investing in green juices and $30 spin classes is a discreet status symbol, a way to convey they care about their health and have the money to do it properly.Smiley made sure Crisp & Green checked all the boxes for this demographic: healthy, digitally accessible, deliverable, and Instagrammable. And so Stalk & Spade was born.The plant-based way of the futureAfter his pandemic success, Smiley said he saw an opportunity to prepare for a post-vaccine economic reopening by giving Americans what he thought they'd need after a health-related recession and a social recession: healthier food and an opportunity to get out of the house.But he recognized that bringing yet another concept into the increasingly saturated wellness sector - especially during a pandemic that saw a declining footprint in the fast casual industry - meant that he'd be facing a tough road. He knew he needed to look toward the future - and what he saw were plants. After all, "everyone wants to live a better life."Nutrition has taken on new importance, per a McKinsey survey, as people now want food that will help them accomplish wellness goals while tasting good. Allstate CHRO details why the insurance leader is betting big on workforce technology

Carrie Blair, the EVP and CHRO of Allstate, told Insider how the insurance leader has calibrated its technological capabilities over the past year. Insider To boost efficiency and in-house capabilities, Allstate has introduced self-service and analytics tools for employees and managers. Allstate Carrie Blair has been EVP and CHRO at Allstate since October 2019. Over the past year, Allstate has been focusing on innovative technology experiences for employees. Blair said she works with the CIO and CFO to prioritize tech investments based on measurable outcomes. This article is part of the "Innovation C-Suite" series about business growth and technology shifts. For Carrie Blair, joining Allstate as the chief human resource officer in October 2019 was a no-brainer. After nearly 15 years in human resources positions at financial services companies, she was ready for a role at an iconic, purpose-driven, optimistic brand. "I can't think of anywhere I've traveled where someone hasn't said, 'Oh, they're the Good Hands people," Blair told Insider. But she was also energized by the idea that Allstate was clearly willing to disrupt and transform the insurance industry, both for consumers and employees. In general, she explained, insurance has fallen behind when it comes to technology innovation, but is catching up fast. Allstate, for example, now uses telematics to assess driving behavior; drones to survey catastrophes; and offers QuickFoto Claim to allow customers to assess car insurance claims for minor vehicle damage. For Allstate's employees, Blair's challenge has been how to prioritize and implement consumer-grade, innovative technology experiences for people inside the company, while still being aggressive with consumer offerings. A new approach to technology and HR"Recently, we've really started taking a look at our entire approach to technology and HR," she said. In the past, for example, the company might have bought tools for talent acquisition, or performance management, but they did not necessarily work well together or across the ecosystem. Now, Allstate's HR organization is working to deploy self-service tools for employees and managers for things that are frequently used or highly repetitive, Blair said, as well as analytics tools that offer them insights about their work patterns. "Every week I get a view that comes into my own personal inbox that tells me how I spent my time last week, how long I was in meetings, how much time I spent collaborating and how much time I had for focused, head-down work," she explained. Another tool offers the organization a full view across the enterprise to understand how and where people are working, which helps inform decisions around real estate in a new, hybrid workplace. For example, the types of collaboration rooms they need and where they should be located. The company has also started using a digital workspace called MURAL. The platform offers a shared digital canvas for visual collaboration, as well as Zoom Rooms, which uses AI-driven face recognition technology to bring hybrid teams, including those together in person, into Zoom meetings. "It creates this level playing field, which stops the in-person group from simply talking to each other and brings remote workers fully into the meeting," she said. All of these tools, she explained, are about testing and learning in the HR space around the most recent technology trends, with a focus on investing in people. "Human capital is always the most important thing," she said. "After all, we don't really produce anything, we deliver services and solutions to customers that depend on people." Technology innovation accelerated by the pandemicThe focus on technology innovation targeting employees was accelerated by the pandemic, said Blair, who began her role at Allstate only six months after COVID-19 shutdowns began. "Our IT team had been investing in our technology stack for a number of years, so we were able to get 95% of our folks working from home within days, around the world," she said. While only 20% of Allstate's workforce worked from home pre-pandemic, she said that under a new hybrid workforce model, that number will permanently rise to over 70%. "We've seen huge increases in applications because of that," Blair said. "It's been a positive outcome that people don't have to be tethered to an office anymore, because we have seen a 30% rise in diverse candidates applying for opportunities, and we can go to markets we never would have been in before." That includes targeting hard-to-find technology talent in places like Miami where Allstate does not have a physical presence, she explained. Blair added that she has worked closely with other C-suite executives, such as the CIO and CFO, around technology innovation, particularly around changing the funding model for technology investments to make sure it focuses on outcomes rather than annual financial cycles. "It will allow us to iterate as we go and get learnings faster," she said. Grocers Love Online Sales. They Hate The Impact It Is Having On Margins

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated online grocery sales, but for traditional grocers, the rise in sales is eroding margins and driving growth in an unprofitable business sector. That is the big takeaway from a new study of 206 U.S. grocers by Wynshop, a digital commerce technology platform, and Incisiv, an industry consulting firm. Nearly one-third of respondents represented grocers with more than $1 billion in annual sales and 88% work at the director level or higher. The State of Digital Grocery: Growth at the Cost of Profitability, conducted between April and June, found that grocery retailers saw digital sales result in 9.5% growth in revenue in 2020, but fulfilling online orders led to a 70% decline in margin. The study noted that digital grocery sales will comprise 20% of overall sales by 2025, but if the current trend continues, that will result in grocery retailers losing $14 million in margin for every $1 billion in revenue. Overall, 86% of respondents said they are dissatisfied with their online profitability. The challenges are many. "Given the spike in digital grocery shopping since the pandemic, it's shocking that the average gross margin for digital orders was just 9% in 2020, causing many grocers to lose money on their online orders," said Gaurav Pant, chief insights officer at Incisiv. "Our latest research with Wynshop shows that the current model is not sustainable for grocery retailers." Many grocers face a technology gap, but the survey also revealed issues related to labor, order-picking inefficiencies, and even the overreliance on third-party platforms such as Instacart. More working parents are holding out for jobs that offer remote flexibility, but the hunt is exhausting. Former art Caitlin Tolchin says she's struggled finding jobs that allow her to work from home to care for her daughter. More want to find remote work, like single mom Cari Gerber who cares for her son attending virtual elementary school. Caitlin Tolchin always imagined when she found out she was pregnant, she and her husband would find a clever way to craft a baby announcement. After all, she was an art director and creativity was her strong suit. But in April 2020, within days of her positive home pregnancy test, Tolchin found herself sobbing on the floor of her New York City apartment. She just learned she'd been laid off from her job as art director at Douglas Elliman Real Estate."The timing couldn't have been worse. It really packed a punch. Here I was pregnant and now out of a job while the world was coming crashing down," the 38-year-old told Insider.When COVID hit, Tolchin's department began working remotely. Within a few weeks, a mass email went out saying that business had taken a hit and staff reductions were imminent. "Moments later, I got an email from HR that I'd been laid off and was shut out of my corporate email. After three years, that was it. No furlough, no two weeks notice, just like that, done," said Tolchin, adding that her furloughed supervisor did call to check in on her, but the damage was already done.Tolchin says job recruiters told her no one would hire someone who'd need maternity leave that winter, so she put her job search on hold. But even after having her baby, she couldn't find a job. Now her daughter is 10 months old, and Tolchin says the job market for creatives still doesn't look promising. "I've sent out somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 resumes and only received about 5 calls, all for in-person work which I'm no longer interested in."In the meantime, she says she plans to enroll in an online art class to build up her skill set. It hasn't been easy, though, because like 7.5 million other Americans, she also lost federal unemployment benefits in September. Tolchin isn't alone in the desire for remote work flexibility, and a willingness to hold out for a job that's the right fit. A recent Insider survey showed 41% of women saying remote flexibility would attract them most in a job offer or incentivize them to expand their job search. More professionals are considering switching careersA recent Pew Research Center report revealed 66% of the unemployed people surveyed "seriously considered changing fields or occupations since they've been unemployed. Forty-one year old divorced mom Cari Gelber says she toyed with the idea after being furloughed from her job in April 2020 at a New York-based video production company. She took the leap - twice. Cari Gelber and her son. Cari Gelber "With my son home all day attending elementary school remotely, I looked for work I could do from home," Gelber told Insider.Gelber soon found a remote, commission-based sales position through a former boss, but stayed on the hunt for something more stable. Several months later, she applied for a full-time remote position at Club Feast, a subscription-based restaurant delivery service. Thanks to her previous hospitality experience, she got the job and now works in the company's restaurant partnerships department.Despite reopenings, not all hourly workers want to return to hospitalityMichael Kidd, a 29-year-old married father of two, was fired from his hourly food service position at Elon Musk's Texas-based company SpaceX in April 2021. "When COVID hit, it was like the world was collapsing and there I was whipping up potatoes and gourmet meals in the employee cafeteria," Kidd told Insider. "I was working 55 to 70 hours a week and then coming home to help my pregnant wife put our 1-year-old son to bed." Michael Kidd with his youngest son. Michael Kidd Kidd says he was emotionally and physically drained, and it became a struggle to get out of bed each morning. "I have ADHD and my work started to suffer," he said. "When I arrived at work late a few too many times, they fired me. They were right to do it, but it still stung," Kidd said. In May, just one month after losing his job, Kidd's wife gave birth to their second son. Instead of looking for another in-person job, Kidd decided to look from work home toa help out more with the new baby. "I started doing freelance content writing and went back to school to earn my Associates degree," said Kidd, who as an army veteran was also able to take advantage of the GI Bill for education costs as well as to assist with rent. In July, Kidd contracted COVID-19 and was bedridden for a week. In August, Kidd's wife took a job as an assistant at a local dance studio to bring in extra money. Around the same time, the family's food stamps came to a stop after a caseworker requested paperwork Kidd was unable to provide. Now he says he has to refile in order to reopen his case. "We're trying to keep up, but it's been touch and go at times financially. The stimulus checks bailed us out for a while, but it hasn't been easy," he said. Like Kidd, unemployed parents across America are bracing themselves for another season of the pandemic, and hanging on by a thread. "Just making the time to search for a job while caring for your family is a job unto itself. They say it takes a village, but because of COVID there is no village," Tolchin told Insider. Plant-based menu items are infiltrating fast food - and meat-eaters are all over them

But while only 15% of self-identified vegans or vegetarians have tried plant-based fast food, 40% of meat-eaters have. If plant-based foods can rival the taste and cost of meat, a Beyond Meat spokesperson told Insider, "we think very few consumers wouldn't opt for that." See more stories on Insider's business page. Fast-food giants might be the last you'd expect to cater to plant-based eaters. Their businesses are centered around the very antithesis of vegan food: animal-based meat and dairy, made fast and made cheap. But over the last few years, fast-food joints have been making a concerted effort to add meat-free, plant-based, and vegan options to their menus. But the people actually opting for those menu items may surprise you.Carl's Jr. has the Beyond Famous Star burger made with Beyond Meat. Burger King offers its Impossible Whopper, made with the infamous "bleeding" Impossible Foods' beef-like patty. Del Taco has the Beyond Avocado Taco, and now a host of other vegan and vegetarian options. Even cheap-beef juggernaut McDonald's is in the plant-burger game with its recently released Beyond Meat-based, all-vegan McPlant burger, kicking off in the United Kingdom. And these are just to name a few. Meat-eaters are, by a large lead, dabbling in plant-based fast food options. Nearly 40% of meat-eaters have tried a meat substitute at a fast-food chain, while only 15% of self-identified vegans or vegetarians have, according to new research from analyst firm Piplsay. "Over the past few years, the fake-meat phenomenon has gone from being a highly speculative curiosity to an in-demand food item, available not just in grocery stores but also dished out over the counters of popular fast-food chains across the country," says the research summary from Piplsay. "From burgers and sandwiches to tacos and pizzas, a wide range of meatless alternatives is available to customers today, many of whom are opting for them for health, environmental, or ethical reasons." Irene Jiang / Business Insider Meat-eating Americans are increasingly motivated to swap animal products for plant-based doppelgangers for a number of reasons, the top being perceived health benefits, followed by the environment. Meeting the increasing demand for meat and dairy alternatives, and driving it, requires meeting meat-eaters where they are - like at the counters and drive-throughs of familiar fast-food restaurants. These chains know meat; they don't know meat substitutes, which is why they often turn to the pure-play brands - basically, ones that focus on one specific niche, like plant-based items - that are eager to have fast-food companies as part of their channel. They've already done the legwork to establish a brand presence and become known as legitimate replacements that actually taste good, something critically important to the discerning meat-eater or flexitarian. "If we can make plant-based meat taste just as delicious, be better for you and ultimately get the price to be below that of animal protein, we think very few consumers wouldn't opt for that," a Beyond Meat spokesperson told Insider. "Our mission is to make our products as accessible as possible and our QSR partners are a critical part of that strategy." Beyond Meat has been delivering on its promise of accessibility. The company, according to its market research partner SPINS, is the top-selling plant-based meat brand across the US in total food service and sells in more than 80 countries. Beyond Meat's competitor, Impossible Foods, also has a major food-service presence, with its most notable fast-food partnership with Burger King. Photo by Yuriko Nakao/Getty Images Eat Just, a top egg-replacement maker with its Just Egg product, is also continuing to partner with fast-food restaurants to meet what it says is a growing demand - especially by millennials and Gen Z, based on research from Mintel. "Consumers are looking for plant-based options at fast-food operators, and [they're] enjoying their experience once they try it," Alexandra Dallago, a spokesperson for Eat Just, told Insider. Dallago noted that 70% of consumers say they liked their experience, according to more data from the aforementioned Piplsay survey. "We are seeing that meat-eaters [and] flexitarians are interested in trying these options and [their] appeal goes far beyond meatless consumers," Dallago said. "We'll continue to see more innovation in plant-based offerings as demand grows and plant-based becomes more mainstream." Eat Just said, for example, for example, its "Everything Plant-Based Sandwich" is the top-selling hot menu item at popular nationwide chain Peet's Coffee. It's also the third across all product categories, including beverage. "The sandwich is selling at three times what was initially forecasted, earning it a permanent menu placement," Dallago said. "It also drives new incremental customers, typically younger, into Peet's locations. High appeal with younger customers because it's an exciting, fully plant-based offering." McDonald's and Beyond Meat offered a plant-based burger in Canada. McDonald's Ricky Borja, a casino executive based in California, falls into the 15% of vegans or vegetarians who have tried plant-based options at mainstream fast food chains. He's tried vegan items from Burger King, Carl's Jr., and Del Taco, and sees why the plant-based offerings are appealing in large to meat-eaters. "People that eat meat know that it's not really good for you, so they see the option and think, 'Oh, it's not meat or an animal product, it must be healthier or better for you,'" Borja said. "Or they think about the environment, and are motivated to give a plant-based option a try."Borja also said he's not surprised that vegans and vegetarians are in smaller numbers eating plant-based fast food from mainstream chains. "Most vegans and vegetarians have already found their own means of eating, and found alternatives already, so they are not gravitating towards these places," Borja said, adding that some vegans really don't want to support corporations that still profit from animal exploitation and thus don't align with their own values. KFC Beyond Chicken John Amis / ASSOCIATED PRESS There's also the issue of cross-contamination, as many staunch vegans or vegetarians don't like the idea of their plant-based burger being potentially cooked on the same grill as meat - although many fast-food operators have said accommodation can be made to ensure no cross-contamination. Despite the vegan population being up 300% since 2004, the group still only makes up 3% of the overall US population, with vegetarians making up 5%. However, there is more cohesive research needed to accurately measure changing food preferences and capture those who are "plant-based," a term typically used to define someone who eats mostly plant-based food, but may periodically eat meat or dairy. It can also be used to identify someone who may not eat any animal products, but isn't necessarily motivated by animal ethics (which may also drive other lifestyle choices) - a defining principle of veganism. By far, the largest opportunity for plant-based food adoption currently lies in the hands, and mouths, of meat-eaters. Not only were most business leaders unprepared to drive a digital transformation, many failed to grasp even what the expression means. “We anticipated that some people might not understand the term, but not to this degree,” says Manchala, the ForbesBooks author of Crossing the Digital Fault Line: 10 Rules of Highly Successful Leaders in Digitalization. “Just 5% of more than 10,000 respondents understood the true meaning of digital transformation. Meanwhile, 51% thought of it as merely upgrading to new websites or online portals.” Digital transformation entails a whole lot more than building better intranets and websites, according to Manchala, CEO of the highly specialized digital transformation services firm Trianz. Instead, it involves harnessing data to truly understand customer behavior in a digital world. It includes reimagining products and services. It concerns delivering high-velocity, digitalized experiences across the value chain to all stakeholders, even if that means existing models need to be discarded in the process. Tips To Handle Digital Transformation Successfully Since the pandemic began, it’s likely that a larger percentage of leaders have arrived at a more wholistic understanding of digital transformation, Manchala says, but too many still struggle with the concept. Here are just a few points that Manchala says business leaders need to understand if they are to handle digital transformation successfully: A Company’s Focus Should Be More On Its Customers Than On The Competition. This doesn’t mean to ignore competitors completely, Manchala says. “Leaders must certainly keep an eye on them, but only if they are better and more successful,” he says. “However, it’s essential to continuously understand one’s own customers, launching new products and services while tracking data for sales, satisfaction and brand loyalty.” Technology Does Not Enable Digital Transformation, People Do. Many companies turn to technology almost blindly to solve their problems, Manchala says. “In fact, the high tech industry has marketed itself so well that people often fall into the trap of thinking that technology solves everything,” he says. “One big reason why most transformational initiatives fail is because their human dimension is neither fully understood nor does it get the attention it deserves.” Digital Leaders Will Be Made, Not Born. The skills required to succeed in the Digital Age are acquired over time and with constant practice. That means everyone has the same opportunity, Manchala says, but it also means they won’t find success using the established leadership personas. Instead, digital transformation requires a new persona that he calls the “methodical innovator,” which is someone who embraces data and a systematic, outcome-oriented approach. “As compared to a flashy and inspirational style, the methodical innovator persona is learned and acquired through practice,” he says. There Is No Finish Line For Winners. How a partnership between the city of Boston and local universities is working to help policymakers better serve residents

BARI collaborates with universities on research projects to offer insights into life in the city. Efforts include research on the city's 311 nonemergency reporting system and an annual conference. This article is part of a series focused on American cities building a better tomorrow called "Advancing Cities." The Boston Area Research Initiative (BARI) brings together academics, policymakers, and community leaders to examine how data and technology can reshape the city's future. "We put a real focus not just on cool technology and efficiency," Dan O'Brien, director of BARI, told Insider, but how these tools can enhance equity, justice, democracy, sustainability, and resilience in Boston. The multiuniversity partnership consists of the city of Boston, Northeastern University, where the organization is housed, Harvard University, and other higher-education institutions in the area. Its mission is to collaborate on research projects and offer insights into daily life in the city to help policymakers better understand and serve residents. Dan O'Brien is the director of BARI. Adam Glanzman / Northeastern University City-university partnerships are critical to digital transformation, as city agencies are consumed by "the daily grind of running a city," O'Brien, who's also an associate professor of public policy and urban affairs, criminology, and criminal justice at Northeastern University said. "Universities bring skills and extra capacity to the table to design research studies, execute research studies, to evaluate, and just to help ask questions."BARI has worked with Boston on several projects, including examining how residents use the city's nonemergency reporting system, studying urban heat islands, and hosting an annual conference to discuss and find solutions for the city's biggest challenges. Here's a look at some of these projects. Research on Boston's nonemergency reporting system revealed inequities in servicesSoon after BARI launched in 2011, the organization began working with the Boston Mayor's Office of New Urban Mechanics to analyze data collected from the city's 311 nonemergency reporting system. The project involved analyzing hundreds of thousands of reports to the system about issues like potholes, broken street lights, and litter to identify who was using 311 and why. Researchers also surveyed residents and ran experiments to see how residents responded to advertisements for 311.The research showed that city services may be democratized, but they weren't necessarily equitable. Some neighborhoods may have just as many needs as others but don't report problems to 311. In 2018, O'Brien published a book on the project titled "The Urban Commons," which outlines why specific neighborhoods took ownership of their environment and infrastructure and reported problems to 311. It also identified ways for city governments to deploy technology, engage citizens, and use the data. "We demonstrated that this collaboration between academia and city agencies could take a new technology, evaluate it, make it stronger, give it meaning and understanding, and essentially advance research at the same time as policy and have the two be mutually reinforcing," O'Brien said.The relationship between heat islands and medical emergencies demonstrates the usefulness of smart-sensor tech The relationship between the city's heat islands, areas that are warmer than surrounding places, and emergency medical reports is another area of O'Brien's research into what he calls "microspatial inequities," or how equitable the features of an area are. In July 2020, he coauthored a study published in the American Journal of Public Health that found street temperatures within Boston neighborhoods can vary by as much as 20 or 30 degrees, depending on the presence of trees and amount of pavement. His team compared temperature data to 911 reports of medical emergencies and found that streets with higher land surface temperatures had more medical emergencies. "Basically, it was what street you were on and its temperature that was more important than what neighborhood you were in," O'Brien said. This project offers lessons for the city as it deals with pollution and prepares for climate change. "Could it be that areas all have their own microspatial components that we should be tracking and responding to and being supportive of?" he said.The need to granularly examine neighborhoods in this manner justifies the need for sensor systems in some areas and offers guidelines for how to design those systems, O'Brien said. Boston has deployed sensors and cameras on some city streets to examine issues like traffic and safety through its Smart Streets initiative. Putting a sensor on every street corner isn't the only solution, though. O'Brien said there isn't enough evidence as to how much value it offers the city. More targeted pilots could provide this information."These are the logistical questions that need to be answered if you're going to build a tool," he said. "How do we optimize to not overspend for a piece of infrastructure like this?" he added.Conferences and community training aids in Boston's digital transformation BARI hosts an annual conference that brings together nearby universities, city agencies, local organizations, and public-sector companies. This year's event, held in April, centered on helping the city rebuild post-pandemic. "It's an opportunity for everyone to come together," O'Brien said. "They're sharing their work, they're building their own collaborations, they're seeing us as a forum where experts of many different stripes can come together to further this work and set a communal agenda." The organization also holds community-based training to teach organizations how to access the data BARI publishes. The goal is to give communities the opportunity to contribute in an egalitarian way to Boston's digital transformation. "Otherwise, the transformation is going to happen to them, not with them," O'Brien said. "And that's a real problem for all smart cities or smart cities-adjacent work.
